As ABC's first Secretary, Karpf added credibility and direction to that position, even challenging the rights of ABC President Thomas Curtis to unilaterally rule on the eligibility of players during the first season of the Congress. While not being in total agreement on all matters, he helped find compromise to overcome many challenges to the rules, such as the number of pins, how many players on a team, how many balls per frame and lane measurements.
