Baer made history at the 1980 USBC Open Championships, when he became the second player in the tournament's history to roll consecutive 2,000 nine-game all-events totals, the latter helping Hal Lieber Trophies to the team and Team All-Events titles. He also won a Team All-Events title in 1973 with Skyway Lanes. Baer was selected the top non-professional in the world for his 1980 achievements by Bowlers Journal.
