Wisconsin bowler leads four events at 2023 USBC Women’s Championships
April 25, 2023
LAS VEGAS – For many bowlers at the United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships, the hope at the end of the day is to see their name atop the leaderboard. For Megan Jirsa of Middleton, Wisconsin, that wish came true in more ways than one.
In just her second appearance at the USBC Women’s Championships, Jirsa put up three impressive sets. She started her run in team Monday at the South Point Bowling Plaza with a 671 series, and she followed that up Tuesday with 645 in doubles and 719 in singles for a 2,035 all-events total.
These scores not only helped Jirsa to the top spot in Diamond All-Events, but she and her teammates are seeing their names proudly displayed at the top of the standings across each event in the Diamond Division at the 2023 tournament (team, doubles, singles, all-events).
Her team, Cheddar Bay Biscuits of Franklin, Wisconsin, put on a show Monday to take the lead in Diamond Team. The group, featuring Jirsa, Suzanne Ronde, Rochelle Roventini and Kristin Warzinski, put up scores of 813, 796 and 826 for a 2,432 total.
In doubles, Jirsa was joined by Warzinski, who rolled a 300 game at the 2012 Women’s Championships in Reno, Nevada. Warzinski led the consistent effort Tuesday with games of 201, 224 and 234 for a 659 series, while Jirsa added 216, 205 and 224 to help the pair to the top of the Diamond Doubles standings with 1,304.
Jirsa continued strong in singles to pace the field with games of 236, 236 and 247. Over the course of her two days at the Bowling Plaza, she had six games of 224 or higher and a low game of 201.
“My team took over first and my doubles went over,” Jirsa said about her performance. “We are walking out leading, so it’s very nice. I know it’s the opening weekend, so I am being optimistic, but obviously I will be watching it. It is absolutely great to see.”
The Diamond Division features bowlers with an entering average of 175 and above.
The 2023 Women’s Championships started April 23 and will conclude July 2. The event will run for 71 consecutive days at the South Point Bowling Plaza and feature more than 4,200 four-player teams and nearly 17,000 bowlers.
