LAS VEGAS - The Wichita State women successfully defended their title at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational, while San Jose State captured the men's crown at the 2014 event at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas on Sunday.
Wichita State earned the no. 1 seed through qualifying and didn't lose a match on their way to the championship, besting Webber International in the finals, 3-0. They defeated Calumet (3-0) and Emmanuel (3-0) to make it to the best-of-five Baker match play final.
San Jose State, the no. 3 seed, outlasted Emmanuel (3-2) and Kansas (3-2) before sweeping Marian (3-0) to set up a title tilt with Midland, who finished second at the 2013 event. San Jose State won the final two matches to secure the top spot in the standings, 3-1.
Wichita State's Daria Kovalova earned the top individual honors for the women, posting a nine-game total of 2,105 (233.88 average). Midland's Sabrena Divis was second with 2,067, and Emmanuel teammates Destiny Harper (1,848) and Ashely Crowder (1,846) took third and fourth, respectively. Laura Plazas of Wichita State rounded out the top five with 1,845.
The men's individual standings also saw a Wichita State competitor at the top of the leaderboard as Francois Lavoie paced the field with 2,088 (232 average). Webber's Justin Dunn took home second with 2,036, and San Jose State's Darren Tang (1,995), Arizona State's Ben Canfield (1,942) and Calumet's Matt Kuba (1,935) also earned spots on the all-tournament team.
