Wichita State sweeps top spots at Mid States Championships

WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State men's and women's varsity teams kicked off their seasons with big wins Sunday at the 2021 Mid States Championships.
The event was held at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kansas, and featured 17 men's teams and 15 women's varsity programs. The format included five traditional games Saturday and 16 Baker games Sunday, with total pinfall determining the champion in each division.

In the men's division, Wichita State began to build its lead during Games 3 and 4 of Saturday's traditional block, rolling scores of 1,053 and 1,134. The Shockers finished Saturday's round with a lead of 225 pins and added onto it Sunday during Baker competition, claiming the victory by 480 pins with an 8,274 total.
The Wichita State men's varsity team featured Brandon Biondo, Briley Haugh, Cameron Hurwitz, Alec Keplinger and Nicholas Sommer.
St. Ambrose finished second with 7,794, and Newman was third with 7,650.
Biondo earned the top spot in the men's individual standings Saturday, posting a five-game total of 1,092, a 218.4 average. Three student-athletes from St. Ambrose followed in the standings, with Nathan Stubler (1,088), Justin Aboud (1,078) and Cameron Crowe (1,066) all averaging over 213. Midland's Kristopher Yadao tied Crowe with 1,066 to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
The Wichita State women followed a similar path on their way to the title, building a 362-pin lead heading into Sunday's Baker round. The Shockers continued strong Sunday, recording a 533-pin victory with an 8,125 total.
The varsity team included Sierra Ciesiolka, Madisyn Hansen, Addie Herzberg, Sydney Hollinger, Madison Janack, Sarah Klassen and Olivia Komorowski.
Oklahoma Christian was second in the women's division with 7,592, and Baker was third with 7,455.
Janack rolled 257 in her final game Saturday to earn top individual honors, posting a 1,104 total, a 220.8 average. She was joined on the all-tournament team by West Texas A&M's Elexis Sledge (1,071), St. Ambrose's Hannah Jaros (1,049), Wichita State's Hollinger (1,042) and Marissa Kearin of Iowa Western CC (1,038).
In the junior varsity division, the St. Ambrose men (7,795) and Ottawa women (6,822) claimed the top spots.
