Wichita group shines at 2019 USBC Women's Championships

WICHITA, Kan. - A group of bowlers with a connection to the host city for the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships rewrote the standings in the Diamond Division this weekend at Northrock Lanes.
The members of ICT Pride No. 1 of Wichita, Kansas, began their run to the top of the leaderboard by taking the lead in Diamond Team with a 2,565 total, and team member Georgia Drewes (750 series) paired with Wichita's Ricki Ellison (635 series) to take the top spot in Diamond Doubles with 1,385.
Drewes, the 2012 Intercollegiate Singles Championships winner while at Newman University, also moved into the lead in Diamond All-Events with 1,975.
ICT Pride No. 1 featured four first-time participants at the USBC Women's Championships and were led by Kaitlyn Rudy's 672 series. She was joined by Drewes (650), Aspen Herzberg (644) and Carley Sullivan (599) on the way to games of 780, 924 and 861.
Each of the team members is connected to Wichita through collegiate bowling. Rudy competes at Wichita State University, while Drewes, Herzberg and Sullivan all have been part of the program at Newman.
Drewes, who serves as the president of the area's Great Plains USBC Association, was thrilled to make her tournament debut in her hometown and get back into the team environment she experienced competing collegiately.
"College bowling gave us great opportunities and a solid background," said Drewes, who rolled 575 in singles on her way to the lead in all-events. "This tournament just brings us to a whole new level. I would like to make a habit of coming to nationals each year."
The group's companion team, ICT Pride No. 2, also made a run at the top of the standings, moving into second place with 2,489 after games of 884, 816 and 789.
Also tied to both Wichita State and Newman, ICT Pride No. 2 featured Kristen Machacek (685), Ashlyn Herzberg (659), Kayla Ovesny (577) and Ellison (568).
On the way to the lead in doubles, Drewes fired games of 259, 244 and 247, while Ellison added 205, 227 and 203.
Drewes and Ellison have been bowling with one another going back to high school, so the camaraderie and familiarity on the lanes already had been established.
"This was fantastic," said Ellison, a two-time Junior Team USA member. "I got to jump on Georgia's back and ride it to the lead. She's a rock star, and all of the support from Wichita has been really cool. I'm really glad that USBC chose Wichita to host this event. I hope all of the ladies will have a great time."
Bowlers in the Diamond Division have entering averages of 190 and above. Diamond Doubles features bowlers with combined averages of 380 and above, and Diamond Team includes bowlers with combined averages of 725 and above.
