Webber men, Newman women lead 2018 Glenn Carlson Invitational

LAS VEGAS – The Webber International men and the Newman women topped the standings after the first day of competition at the 2018 Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational at the South Point Bowling Plaza.
The tournament format included six traditional games Monday, with three additional games Tuesday morning to complete qualifying. Following the conclusion of qualifying, the men’s field of 37 teams will be cut to the top 16 for bracket match play, while eight of the 22 women’s team will advance to Tuesday afternoon’s bracket. The Baker format will be used during match play.
Webber finished the day with a 6,626 six-game total to grab the early lead and was followed by William Penn (6,580), St. Francis-Illinois (6,506), Calumet (6,425) and Wichita State (6,375). Nebraska (5,919) sits in 16th place and holds the final spot for the bracket.
The Newman women paced the field with a 6,185 total and hold a 71-pin advantage over Wichita State. The Lady Jets will enter Tuesday morning’s qualifying with the inside track to the No. 1 seed for bracket match play.
Midland (6,066), St. Francis-Illinois (5,834) and Webber (5,686) round out the top five. William Penn (5,571) currently occupies the eighth spot to advance to the bracket.
Individually, Webber International’s Matt Russo began the day with games of 279, 245 and 300 for an 824 series, and he added games of 186, 242 and 226 for a 1,478 total, an average of 246.3. Russo’s 300 was the second of the event as Pikeville’s Jonathan Lovett was the first to reach perfection in Game 2. St. Francis-Illinois’ Michael Kicmal and Austin Gilbert of San Jose State also rolled 300 games during Monday’s qualifying.
St. Francis-Illinois’ Robert Kicmal (1,464), Dallas Leong of Nevada-Las Vegas (1,428), and a pair of Midland Warriors, Morgan Moore (1,422) and Kolby Crowell (1,376), rounded out the top five in the individual standings.
On the women’s side, 2017 National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association Rookie of the Year Abby Ragsdale of St. Francis-Illinois led the way with a six-game total of 1,331, an average of 221.83. Newman’s Ashton Anderson (1,321), Midland’s Brittney Schnicke (1,319) and Candice Goldfinch (1,315) along with Webber’s Caitlyn Johnson (1,311), the reigning NCBCA Most Valuable Player, are in the top five.
