Ward wins women's competition at SWIBC Fall Singles Classic


Houston Community College's Taylor Ward went 5-1 during match play en route to a first-place finish in the women's competition at the 2009 SWIBC Fall Singles Classic, which was held Sept. 19-20 at Palace Lanes in Houston.

Ward's only loss came at the hands of Texas Southern's Karymry Mosley, who topped Ward, 257-185, to open the championship match. Ward rebounded from there, however, winning the next two games (218-175, 248-195) to secure the title.

Ward got to the championship match by defeating North Texas' Deanna Marine 2-0 (247-156, 231-192) in the semifinals. In the Round of 8, she dispated LSU's Amanda DeWitt 2-0 (201-190, 241-141).

Mosley earned her shot at the title by grabbing a 2-0 (183-178, 255-184) semifinal victory over Texas Southern teammate Chantel Jefferson. One round earlier, Mosley had to rely on total pins to win her match over Houston's Melissa Rojas, 578-567. Mosley won the opening game 191-180 before the pair tied each of the next two games, 152-152 and 235-235.

Mosley was the No. 3 seed heading into match play. She earned that position by shooting 748 during the four-game qualifying block. Ward topped the qualifying field with 862. Jefferson was second with 794.
