Utah pair highlights busy start at 2021 USBC Women's Championships

RENO, Nev. - Tina Duarte of Herriman, Utah, and Aubrey Clark of Layton, Utah, paced a busy day of competition at the 2021 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships.
Duarte and Clark started competition Tuesday at the National Bowling Stadium by taking over the lead in Sapphire Doubles with a 1,070 combined total, and Duarte also secured the top spot in Sapphire Singles with a 563 series.
In addition to the changes in the Sapphire Division, new leaders also emerged in the Ruby and Emerald Divisions within a 24-hour time period.
Cindy Pate of Lafayette, Louisiana, started the excitement Monday by taking the lead in Emerald Singles (622) and Emerald All-Events (1,765), before her score in singles was surpassed Tuesday by Julie Badham of Centerville, Utah (650).
The final change at the top of the leaderboard took place in Ruby All-Events, where Linda Stuursma of Monee, Illinois, edged the top score by two pins as she finished with 1,790.
The 2021 USBC Women's Championships started April 23 and will run until July 4.
Duarte and Clark were consistent on their way to the Sapphire Doubles lead. Duarte led the way with games of 176, 169 and 197 for a 542 series, while Clark added 181, 166 and 181 for 528.
Duarte continued the steady pace in singles, rolling games of 180, 204 and 179 to take the lead. She added 449 in team event to also move into second place in Sapphire All-Events with 1,554. Sarah Collier of Milner, Georgia, leads Sapphire All-Events with 1,578.
"This was one of the most consistent performances in my bowling career," Duarte said.
Pate got stronger with each set at the NBS, with her 622 singles effort being preceded by 578 in doubles and 565 in team.
Badham's performance in singles to surpass Pate included games of 196, 219 and 235.
Stuursma was consistent on her way to the lead in Ruby All-Events, posting sets of 608 in doubles, 604 in singles and 578 in team to edge Debra King of Verdi, Nevada, who previously held the top spot with 1,788.
Sapphire Doubles features bowlers with combined entering averages between 276-297. Sapphire Singles and All-Events includes competitors with entering averages of 138-148.
The Ruby Division is for bowlers with entering averages of 161-174, and the Emerald Division features bowlers with entering averages of 149-160.
