EL PASO, Texas - Krista Hyer of Salina, Utah, broke into the top 10 at the 2010 USBC Women's Championships with a 1,828 all-events effort at the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center on Wednesday.
The 43-year-old right-hander finished with a 552 scratch series in doubles, 548 in singles and 503 in team and received an additional 25 pins of handicap per game to move into sixth place in Ruby All-Events. Betty Brooks of Lakewood, Calif., leads with 1,898.
Hyer's effort during team event also helped Zeeks Fiberglass Repair of Glenwood, Utah, into ninth place in Sapphire Team. The team rolled scratch games of 709, 815 and 741 and received an additional 35 pins of handicap per game to finish at 2,370. Auto Way Bowl of Minden, Neb., holds the top spot with 2,464.
Hyer credited keeping a positive outlook for her success on the championship lanes.
"I just tried to keep the positive energy up and kept telling myself to go up and strike," said Hyer, who participated in her fifth Women's Championships. "We take our bowling seriously but really try to have fun while we're doing it. I was so excited and happy when I found out about being in the top 10. When we came back to take pictures of the leaderboard, we saw our team was up there as well. This has just been great."
Hyer and some of her teammates also prepared for the Women's Championships by competing at the USBC Open Championships in Reno, Nev., earlier in June.
She enjoyed the opportunity to compete on the synthetic lane surfaces found at both tournaments. Her home house, Jorgensen's Lanes in Richfield, Utah, features wood lanes and manual scoring.
"We just kept bowling tournaments after league finished up," Hyer said. "It's really nice to bowl on the synthetic lanes, since we are used to wood. We feel spoiled rotten here. I'm shocked that they built the lanes for this tournament."
Hyer also enjoys the tournament as a chance to carry on her family's tradition of bowling. She remembers watching her mother and grandmother bowl and now shares the tournament with her daughter, Karissa Stermer.
"I got my daughter into bowling, and she met her husband on the lanes," Hyer said. "He even proposed to her on the lanes. She's been with me to the tournament for four years now. We're just hoping to continue the tradition."
The Ruby Division includes bowlers with averages between 150 and 179, with handicap based on 100 percent of 180.
Presenting sponsors for the 2010 USBC Women's Championships are Nationwide Insurance; Kegel, official lane maintenance provider; US Steltronic, official scoring system; Brunswick; Storm Bowling Products Inc.; and the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau.
