USBC Youth watch Duke claim 68th U.S. Open

When Norm Duke claimed a somewhat improbable victory at the 68th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open on Sunday, five youth bowlers from New Jersey watched one of the more interesting title matches this season.

USOpenkidsLARGEDuke won his seventh career major at Brunswick Zone-Carolier in North Brunswick, N.J., with a 225-216 victory over Mika Koivuniemi. Koivuniemi had the chance to take the title but missed a 10-pin spare attempt in the final frame.

Five USBC Youth members witnessed the match as part of the PBA/USBC Insiders' Tour, a program that allows special access. At the U.S. Open, the youth bowlers had the chance to meet PBA Tour stars, attend Saturday night's match play finals and Sunday's ESPN television finals, where they were seen sporting their USBC Youth jerseys. They also took a behind-the-scenes tour of the center.

After the final, the youth went on the approach to have their picture taken with Duke. In the photo, from left, are: Kayla Rosa, Vincent Mele, Tyler Marie Karpinecz, Nicolette Arnone and Brandon Myricks.

The PBA/USBC Youth Insiders' Tour participants were randomly selected from area USBC Youth bowlers. Karpinecz, 12, bowls at Woodbridge Bowling Center and was able to see the player she lists as his favorite, Duke, take the title. Arnone and Myricks, both 13, bowl at Brunswick Zone Carolier. Mele, 10, bowls at Stelton Lanes and Kayla Rosa, 11, competes at Majestic Lanes.
