USA takes four team titles as TOA concludes
August 03, 2013
ARLINGTON, Texas - The United States captured four of the five team titles as competition in the 51st Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas in Sunrise, Fla., concluded Saturday.
The titles in the team competition completed a highly successful week for the United States team as it won 25 of a possible 30 titles at Strikers Lanes and had the top performer in each of the 10 divisions in all-events.
On Saturday in the Adult division, Team USA members Brittni Hamilton of Webster, N.Y., Josie Earnest of Nashville, Tenn., Eddie VanDaniker of Chatsworth, Calif., and Steve Smith of San Diego, trailed Colombia heading into the final four games of team competition. Columbia took the title with a 8,050 pinfall total, 69 pins ahead of the USA team. Canada finished third.
Junior Team USA members Elise Bolton of Merritt Island, Fla., Morgan O'Brien of Lomira, Wis., Andrew Anderson of Holly, Mich., and Michael Coffey of Melbourne, Fla., with a 7,878 pinfall total, won the Junior A (ages 16-19) division by nearly 500 pins over Puerto Rico.
In Junior B (ages 12-15), the U15 development team of Breanna Clemmer of Clover, S.C., Ashley Dunn of Palmdale, Calif., Bradley Crouse of Nazareth, Pa., and Wesley Low of Palmdale, Calif., was equally impressive as its 7,607 total easily topped Venezuela (7,029) and Colombia (6,916).
Paula Vidad, Char Hammel, Bob Haney and Pete Thomas won the Senior Division ahead of Canada, and USBC Hall of Famer Dana Miller-Mackie, Jacqueline Smith, David Hurtt and Ed Roberts took the Super Senior title.
"We seemed to struggle some at this event last year but everyone did really well this year," Team USA assistant coach Bryan O'Keefe said. "We worked together, from the Under 15 team through the Super Seniors. While the Adult team didn't finish the way we wanted, you have to give Colombia credit; they bowled great."
O'Keefe also credited USBC Coaching Specialist Stephen Padilla and USBC Gold coach Michael Nyitray for their work with the USA teams throughout the week.
The Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas is the oldest annual international tournament in the American Zone. It is an invitational competition for countries in the Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON), the American Zone of the World Tenpin Bowling Association.
In each division, one team comprised of two men and two women competed in singles, doubles, mixed doubles and mixed team. Individual all-events and national all-events champions were recognized.
In all-events, Hamilton and Smith won in Adult, O'Brien and Anderson won Junior A, Clemmer and Low won Junior B, Vidad and Thomas topped the Senior division, and Miller-Mackie and Roberts won in Super Senior Women.
