U.S. wins three golds in mixed doubles at TOA

ARLINGTON, Texas - The United States won three of five gold medals in mixed doubles competition at the 53rd Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas in Sunrise, Florida, on Thursday.
The one-day mixed doubles event featured six games with combined total pinfall determining medalists.
The Colombian pair of Maria Tello and Edwar Rey mounted a tremendous comeback in their final three games at Strikers Lanes to edge out both U.S. teams to earn the Adult gold medal.
Tello and Rey finished Thursday's competition with a 469 combined game, giving them a 2,494 total and the top spot in the standings. Team USA's Kayla Johnson and Chris Colella (2,485) finished nine pins behind to take the silver medal, while teammates Erin McCarthy and AJ Chapman (2,479) ended up 15 pins short of the lead and settled for bronze.
The members of Junior Team USA finished at the top of the standings in Junior A (ages 16-19). Julia Bond and Michael Coffey coasted to the gold medal after posting a combined score of 1,419 in their first three games to finish with a 2,682 total. Jadee Scott-Jones and Kenny Ryan earned silver with 2,497.
Ana Sofia Bolaya and Diego Bishop of Colombia finished strong to edge the U.S. team of Brogan Zengel and Michael Schoerner for the gold in Junior B (ages 12-15). Bolaya and Bishop finished with 2,421 to sneak past Zengel and Schoerner (2,394) by 27 pins. Ashley Channell and Cortez Schenck took bronze with 2,315.
In the Senior division, Brenda Burns and Mark Porter captured gold medals for the U.S. squad after posting a 2,468 total, while USBC Hall of Famer Tish Johnson and Craig Auerbach finished second with 2,390.
The tandem of Sharon Powers and Clark Poelzer cruised to the Super Senior title with a 2,317 total, nearly 175 pins ahead of Canada's Cathy Harvey and Amneris Fernandez. Kristy Whitcher and John Katsaros finished fourth with 2,048.
The team competition will begin Friday at Strikers Lanes, and conclude Saturday.
The Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas is the oldest annual international tournament in the American Zone. It is an invitational event for countries in the Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON), the American Zone of World Bowling.
In each division, one team comprised of two men and two women compete in singles, doubles, mixed doubles and mixed team. After the completion of those events, individual all-events and national all-events champions are recognized.
