U.S. teams in good position in team event at TOA

ARLINGTON, Texas - The United States leads in four of five divisions after the first day of team competition at the 51st Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas in Sunrise, Fla.
Teams bowled six games on Friday and will complete the competition with four more games on Saturday to conclude the week-long tournament.
Team USA members Brittni Hamilton of Webster, N.Y., Josie Earnest of Nashville, Tenn., Eddie VanDaniker of Chatsworth, Calif., and Steve Smith (above) of San Diego are the only U.S. team trailing, but Colombia holds just a 30-pin lead in the Adult division. The U.S. team did have the highest single game on the day, shooting 900 in the fifth game.
Elise Bolton of Merritt Island, Fla., Morgan O'Brien of Lomira, Wis., Andrew Anderson of Holly, Mich., and Michael Coffey of Melbourne, Fla., of Junior Team USA jumped to a 292-pin lead after the first three games in the Junior A (ages 16-19) division. The team finished the day with a 329-pin lead over second-place Canada.
In Junior B (ages 12-15), the U15 development team of Breanna Clemmer of Clover, S.C., Ashley Dunn of Palmdale, Calif., Bradley Crouse of Nazareth, Pa., and Wesley Low of Palmdale, Calif., had a steady performance and hold a 448-lead over Colombia.
In the Senior Division, Paula Vidad, Char Hammel, Bob Haney and Pete Thomas of the United States (4,574) lead Canada (4,270). Vidad and Thomas can each claim their fourth gold medal of the tournament.
USBC Hall of Fame member Dana Miller-Mackie, Jacqueline Smith, David Hurtt and Ed Roberts of the U.S. lead Mexico in the Super Senior division. Miller-Mackie also is seeking her fourth title at this year's event.
The Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas is the oldest annual international tournament in the American Zone. It is an invitational competition for countries in the Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON), the American Zone of the World Tenpin Bowling Association.
In each division, one team comprised of two men and two women compete in singles, doubles, mixed doubles and mixed team. After 36 games, individual all-events and national all-events champions are recognized.
In the all-events race, Hamilton and Smith lead in Adult, O'Brien and Anderson lead Junior A, Clemmer leads Junior B, Vidad and Thomas lead in Senior, and Miller-Mackie and Roberts lead in Super Senior. The U.S. leads in all five divisions in national all-events.
