U.S. girls win team gold at PABCON Youth

The Junior Team USA girls came back to capture the gold medal in team event on Thursday at the 2013 Pan American Bowling Confederation Youth Championships in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

The U.S. boys, who held the lead after Wednesday's opening day of the team event, bowled later Thursday at Bolera Caribe.

GirlsGoldPabcon2The U.S. girls team entered the final three games of the team competition in fourth place but after the first two games on Thursday had moved into third place.

Trailing leader Puerto Rico by 16 pins entering the final game, the U.S. team rolled a 919 game, the highest game of the team event, to take the title. In the final game, Mary Wells shot 249, Sarah Lokker added 246, Robyn Renslow had 213 and Natalie Goodman had a 211 game on the 44-foot London pattern.

"All along they felt like they had an advantage on the long pattern," Team USA assistant head coach Kim Terrell-Kearney said. "They were confident going into the day, they kept their composure and had an unbelievable finish."

With games of 785, 778 and 919, the U.S. girls finished the six-game team competition with a 2,482 pinfall total. Puerto Rico (2,284) took the silver medal while Colombia (2,451) claimed the bronze. Lokker led Junior Team USA with a 643 series on Thursday, followed by Wells (626), Renslow (608) and Goodman (605).

On Wednesday, the U.S. boys posted games of 873, 847 and 917 for a 2,637 total to take a 13-pin lead over Puerto Rico (2,624). Wesley Low had a 703 series to lead the U.S. team followed by Matthew Farber (674), Kamron Doyle (664) and Gregory Young (596). Mexico currently sits third at 2,496.

The U.S. girls also picked up two medals in all-events. Puerto Rico's Kristie Lopez (4,345, 206.9 average) won the gold medal with Lokker (4,331) earning silver and Renslow (4,311) taking bronze.

The PABCON Youth Championships will conclude Friday with Masters competition.
