Third round winds down at Junior Gold

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. - Competitors at the 2013 North Pointe Junior Gold Championships presented by Ebonite, Hammer, Track and Columbia 300 finished their 15-game qualifying totals on Wednesday.
Nick Kruml of Downers Grove, Ill., leads the 20-and-under boys after three rounds by a wide margin with a 15-game total of 3,442 (229.47 average). Kruml fired a huge 1,232 block in the third round.
Darren Tang of San Francisco is second with 3,268, while Tylor Greene of Davison, Mich., is third with 3,265. It took a score of 2,880 (192 average) to make the first cut.
Lizabeth Kuhlkin of Rotterdam, N.Y., remained the leader in the U20 girls division with 3,105 (207 average). Julia Bond of Aurora, Ill., is second with 3,058, while Amanda Fry of Antelope, Calif., is third with 3,035. The cut score was 2,766 (184.4 average) to advance to the fourth round.
With the third round completed in the 15-and-under division, Cortez Schenck of Phoenix leads the boys with 3,132 (208.8 average). Brennan Haugh of Faribault, Minn., is second with 3,130, while Jerod Hromek of Towanda, Kan., is third with 3,092.
Defending U15 girls champion Breanna Clemmer of Clover, S.C., remained on top of the leaderboard with a total of 2,999 (199.93 average). She was the only player in the U15 girls division to go plus in the third round with 1,033. Kaci Collins of Charlotte, N.C., is second with 2,854, while Mykaela Mitchell of London, Ontario, is third with 2,831.
Three players in the U20 boys division picked up perfect games in the third round on Wednesday. Spencer Werthmann of Davenport, Iowa, Michael Preston of Oswego, Ill., and Jordan Richard of Imperial, Mo., all shot 300 at Sunnybrook Lanes.
After 15 games is completed for all bowlers, the field will be cut to the top 146 U20 boys, 81 U20 girls, 45 U15 boys and 24 U15 girls.

A total of 2,078 of the nation's top youth bowlers are competing in the North Pointe Junior Gold at six bowling centers in the Detroit metro area.
The boys competition is being held at AMF Rose Bowl in Roseville and Sterling Lanes and Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights. The girls are competing at Astro Lanes in Madison Heights, 5 Star Lanes in Sterling Heights and Bowl One in Troy. The final two days for all competitors will be at Sunnybrook Lanes.
All bowlers bowl 15 games of qualifying over three days. One out of every seven bowlers will advance to the next round, where an additional five games will be bowled Thursday. After 20 games, as many as 64 bowlers in each division will advance to five final qualifying games Thursday evening before the field is cut to the top 16 in each division for the double-elimination match-play bracket on Friday.
Automatic Junior Team USA spots will be awarded to the top two boys and top two girls in the 20-and-under division after 25 games of qualifying. Additional automatic spots will be given to the winner and runner-up after bracket play in the 20-and-under division. If one or both of the finalists in the bracket already earned a spot through qualifying, the automatic spot becomes an at-large selection.
The National Selection Committee will select two boys and two girls from the match-play field, with all bowlers, including 15 and under, eligible for at-large selection. The final eight spots - four boys and four girls - on Junior Team USA will be determined at the USBC Team USA Trials in January.
