Texas bowler celebrates 50 years at USBC Women’s Championships

RENO, Nev. – A celebration was in store for Sandra Jones of Burleson, Texas, for accomplishing a milestone of 50 years of participation at the United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships on Tuesday at the National Bowling Stadium.
Jones made her first appearance at the 1973 tournament in Las Vegas and was joined by her husband all the way.
This milestone was special for the Texas bowler, since it’s a milestone she’s been waiting to achieve for a while. On Tuesday, she received a plaque, chevron and necklace alongside her husband, who attended with her at the National Bowling Stadium.
When asked about receiving her award, Jones said, “It feels so tremendous. It’s a feeling that you just don’t know how to feel. When I started bowling, I never thought I would get here, but I did, and I’m so excited!”
Having the support from her husband since the beginning is something very important for the Texas bowler. Jones mentions how thankful she is to have him support her in many ways over the years and how it’s a blessing.
“I am so thankful to have a husband who has helped support me, has driven me to tournaments, and to my parents for helping me out,” Jones said.
Throughout her bowling journey, Jones has had many exciting moments. The one moment that stood out to her was the tournament in Niagara Falls, New York, in 1984, where she was in first place for the day.
“I think my most memorable moment was being in first place in Niagara Falls for one day,” said Jones, a member of the North Texas USBC Hall of Fame. “It felt wonderful and was a surprise.”
Her milestone appearance at the USBC Women’s Championships was an addition to a previous accomplishment for Jones. She previously made her 50th appearance in her state tournament alongside her daughter, who reached 31 years of participation. Jones hopes to keep going so she can see her daughter get her 50th in state as well.
“Two weeks ago, I got my 50th at state, and my daughter got her 31st,” Jones said. “So, mom has to bowl 19 more years so I can see her get her 50th.”
Reflecting on her time at the Women’s Championships, Jones has had an amazing experience alongside her bowling partner. They have been bowling since the beginning, with Jones just missing one year. The Texas bowler got to see her friend get her 50th last year in Las Vegas, which was special.
“I’m just thankful for all these years and the people that have come and bowled with me,” Jones said. “My bowling partner got her 50th last year, and it was just tremendous to see!”
