PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio - The members of Team Singapore only spend a few weeks each year in the United States competing on the Professional Women's Bowling Association Tour, but their presence always is noticed near the top of the standings.
At the season-opening Nationwide PWBA Greater Cleveland Open, Singapore's Cherie Tan and Bernice Lim each made their way to the top of the standings during Friday's opening qualifying round at Yorktown Lanes.
Tan, a 30-year-old left-hander and champion at the 2016 PWBA Storm Sacramento Open, moved into the overall lead during the final two games of the eight-game block, finishing with a 1,935 total, a 241.8 average.
Lim, a 27-year-old right-hander and winner at the 2016 United States Bowling Congress Queens, started competition with games of 278, 259 and 267 for an 804 series and finished the opening round in second overall with 1,903.
Canada's Caroline Lagrange, a rookie on tour this season, is in third with 1,883, while Erin McCarthy of Omaha, Nebraska, and Lindsay Boomershine of Perry, Utah, round out the top five with 1,857 and 1,855, respectively.
All competitors at the PWBA Greater Cleveland Open will return to Yorktown Lanes on Friday at 5 p.m. Eastern for the final eight-game round of qualifying. After 16 games, the top 32 players will advance to the next round, which will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. Eastern.
Heading into the final qualifying round, Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills, California, is in 32nd place with 1,733, a 216.63 average.
The high-scoring opening round also featured three 300 games from Yorktown Lanes. Lagrange was the first to connect for perfection in Game 4 and was followed in Game 5 by Kristin Nieter of Homewood, Illinois, and Kara Mangiola of Rochester, New York.
Bowlers advancing to Saturday's Round of 32 will bowl an additional eight games to determine which 12 players make the next round. The Round of 12 will consist of six additional games, with total pinfall for 30 games determining the four players advancing to the stepladder finals.
The stepladder finals will take place Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Eastern and be broadcast live on BowlTV.com. BowlTV is providing wire-to-wire coverage of the PWBA Greater Cleveland Open.
