First team title is awarded in New Hampshire

Spaulding High School captured the first state bowling title awarded by the New Hampshire Intercollegiate Athletic Association on Feb. 19 at Spare Time Lanes in Manchester.

The No. 7 seed in the tournament, Spaulding won its first match then took a 4-2 victory over No. 2 seed Stevens High School in the quarterfinals. Spaulding continued its run with a 4-2 victory over No. 6 Keene in the semifinals before taking out top-seed Pinkerton Academy, 4-1, in the title match.

Spaulding was led by anchor Cody Bond, Colton Castonguay, Madison Goldstein, Josh Paige and team captain Liz Rowan. Substitutes included Dave Taylor and Tyler Norman.

Bond continued Spaulding's success at the individual state tournament held Feb. 26 at Strikers East in Raymond, N.H. Pinkerton's Jon Pierson won twice to advance to the title match in the stepladder finals but Bond took the title with a 208-132 victory. Hollis-Brookline's Andrew Cappetta took the Medal Flight with a two-pin victory over Jacob Dunham of Merrimack.

Broken Arrow boys win again, Ponca City takes girls' title in Oklahoma

Broken Arrow High School defended it boys' team title while Ponca City girls' team captured its first title at the 2011 Oklahoma High School Bowling State Championships.

The tournament was held Feb. 26 at the Red Apple Bowling Center in Bartlesville, Okla., and featured 32 teams - 16 boys, 16 girls - that had advanced from regional competition. The teams bowled an eight-game Baker block with the top eight teams advancing to bracket play, which were best-of-five matches.

Broken Arrow earned the top seed in qualifying, and then beat Yukon, 3-0, in the first round of match play. After a hard-fought victory over Enid in the semifinals, Broken Arrow swept Kiefer in the title match. Coached by Charles Proctor, the members of the Broken Arrow team are A.J. Biossenin, Cody Engle, Zac Gullickson, Jordan Hadden, Ryan Leach, Austin Neely, George Stanford and Aaron Wolfe.

The Ponca City girls also earned the top seed before beating Owasso, Altus, and, in the title match, sweeping Lawton, 3-0. Coached by Kevin Cochran, team members are Cortney and Kristina Cnossen, Kylie Hein, Miranda Horton, Erin Isam, Callie Larmer, Tara Laughlin and Ashley Smith.

Guilford boys, Harlem girls take titles in Illinois

The 2011 Illinois high School Association state tournament was held Feb. 11-12 at Cherry Bowl Lanes in Rockford, Ill., and Rockford Guilford took the boys' team title with Machesney Park Harlem taking the girls' team title.

In the team competition, each round consisted of three games with total pinfall based on the cumulative total for the five bowlers on each team. The top 12 teams in total pinfall after three rounds advanced to the final round.

The Rockford Guilford boys totaled 12,696 in the competition to outpace Vernon Hills (12,387) and Lake Zurich (12,357). Seniors Nic Aures (team-high 2,609) and Colton Magnuson, junior Cory Lenz and freshman Trustin Givens led the way for Guilford along with seniors Mike Sharp and Keifer Nassab.

In the boys' individual competition, Lockport's Kyle Anderson (2,817) held off Mike Schmitt of Lake Zurich to win by 45 pins. Schmitt had a 734 series in the final round. Aaron Adams of Roselle Lake Park was third, followed by Joe Netzel of Chicago St. Patrick and Orland Park Sandburg's Joey Kopera.

Machesney Park Harlem posted a 12,533 pinfall total to beat Plainfield Central by 348 pins for the girls' state title. Harlem had a balanced attack led by junior Sammi Hagerman (2,588) and sophomore Lindsey Anderson (2,585). Seniors Angie Washington and Caitlyn Sabin and junior K'Lynn Lawver each were over 2,400 pins.

O'Fallon's Natalie Goodman (2,867) took the girls' individual title ahead of Schaumburg's Jodi Gawlik (2,758) and Courtney Petoskey of Oswego. Brandi Underwood of DeKalb was fourth and Tedra Tado from Elk Grove placed fifth.
