Standout performances highlight Day 1 of 2026 USBC Senior Championships

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Qualifying kicked off on Wednesday at the 2026 USBC Senior Championships, where 377 bowlers completed their opening three-game set at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Several of North America’s best men’s and women’s bowlers age 50 and older who qualified through either a state or province senior tournament put their skills to the test across two divisions – Open and Women’s – in six age-based classifications – 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and older.
Below are the top three in each classification after Round 1 of qualifying:
WOMEN’S DIVISION:
50-54:
There was a three-way tie for first place in the division after Day 1 of competition at Ashwaubenon with Margaret Galczynski of Plainfield, Connecticut; L’Ree Hebert of New Iberia, Louisiana; and Karena Miller of Eden, South Dakota; each coming in with matching three-game totals of 703.
Galczynski began her set with a score of 222 and followed it up with games of 165 and 172 to finish the day with a three-game scratch total of 559, to which she added 144 pins of handicap.
Hebert put up scores of 240, 163 and 189 for 592 scratch (111 handicap), while Miller used marks of 184, 137 and 178 to post 499 scratch (204 handicap).
55-59:
The No. 1 spot after Round 1 belonged to Teresa Huddleston of Moro, Arkansas, who authored games of 162, 201 and 164 to post a scratch total of 527. Huddleston added 246 pins of handicap to that tally to finish Wednesday’s opening round with a score of 773.
Terry Slingerland of Colchester, Vermont, used a scratch score of 560 and 156 pins of handicap to reach second place with 716.
Third place on Day 1 went to LeAnne DeWeese of Philadelphia, Mississippi, who came in at 707 (605 scratch; 102 handicap). Deweese reached that mark thanks to scratch games of 180, 222 and 203.
60-64:
Sally Hill of St. Louis used two games over 200 (238 and 221) to finish Wednesday’s action in first place with a three-game score of 726, which included 627 scratch to go along with 99 pins of handicap.
Kim Glankler of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was second with 716 (632 scratch; 84 handicap), while Donna Harvin of Garrison, Texas, settled for third at 711 (456 scratch; 255 handicap).
65-69:
Cindy Schell of Valentine, Nebraska, tallied a scratch total of 565 and added 168 pins of handicap to lead the division with a Round 1 total of 733.
Mary Jo Henk of Monument, Colorado, was close behind, trailing Schell by just 19 pins with a Day 1 mark of 714, which included 564 scratch and 150 pins of handicap.
Sarah Thomas of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, also broke 700 on Wednesday, using 539 scratch and 162 pins of handicap to finish the day in third place at 701.
70-74:
Charlotte Winklepleck of Strasburg, Colorado; Vickie Leiker of Ness City, Kansas; and Debbie Deeds of Libby, Montana, shared the spotlight on Day 1 at Ashwaubenon, finishing Wednesday’s opening round tied for the division lead with matching scores of 714.
Winklepleck authored the trio’s highest scratch total, using games of 191, 138 and 172 to come in with 501 scratch, to which she added 213 pins of handicap.
Deeds used a high game of 197 to post 498 scratch (216 handicap), and Leiker broke 150 during two of her three games (152 and 159) to finish the day with 450 scratch (264 handicap).
75 and older:
Janice York of Clarendon, Arkansas, showed steady improvement during her first three games, coming in with scores of 127, 142 and 173. That gave York a scratch total of 442, which was combined with 273 pins of handicap to move York into first place in the division at 715.
Martha Bates of Philadelphia, Mississippi, finished Wednesday’s opening round in second place with 712 (547 scratch; 165 handicap), and Carole Preszler of Lemmon, South Dakota, was third with 705 (492 scratch; 213 handicap).
OPEN DIVISION:
50-54:
Rickie Banister of Peyton, Colorado, was strong from start to finish, rolling scores of 268, 258 and 257 to vault to the top of the opening-round standings with a three-game scratch total of 783 – Banister gets no handicap.
George Barnes III of Claremore, Oklahoma, finished Round 1 in second place with 741 (711 scratch; 30 handicap).
Jason Richards of Columbia, Missouri, was third at 726. Richards receives no handicap, so his opening-round tally came courtesy of scratch game scores of 249, 245 and 232.
55-59:
Roy Vann Esselstine of Howard, Colorado, reached the top of the division standings on Wednesday by rolling games of 213, 254 and 173 for a scratch total of 640. Vann Esselstine added 135 pins of handicap to post a first-place total of 775.
Rick Joseph of Valentine, Nebraska, was second at 763, which he arrived at by posting 616 scratch to go along with 147 pins of handicap.
Todd Iverson of East Grand Forks, North Dakota, got off to a strong start as well, recording games of 198, 221 and 238 to finish Day 1 in third place at 711 (657 scratch; 54 handicap).
60-64:
Barry Slater of Locust, North Carolina, grabbed the opening-round lead thanks to a three-game scratch total of 731, which included games of 269, 205 and 257 – Slater receives no handicap at this year’s tournament.
Daren Breedlove of Harrison, Arkansas, who also is bowling scratch at the 2026 Senior Championships, wasn’t far behind, placing second with 720 (256, 225 and 239).
Craig Riker of Fabius, New York, was four pins behind Breedlove, placing third with 716 (659 scratch; 57 handicap).
65-69:
Steve Butler of Fowler, Indiana, placed his name atop the division standings on opening day with a score of 779. Butler reached that mark thanks to scratch games of 201, 167 and 267 to go along with 144 pins of handicap.
Henry Metz of Kingwood, West Virginia, wasn’t far behind, finishing Wednesday’s first round at Ashwaubenon 27 pins behind Butler with a score of 752, which included 608 scratch and 144 pins of handicap.
Michael Brown of Hooksett, New Hampshire, landed in third place after Round 1 of qualifying, coming in with a mark of 738 (660 scratch; 78 handicap).
70-74:
Clifton Southam of Vernal, Utah, and Chris Armen of Easthampton, Massachusetts, both finished above the 700 mark on Wednesday. Southam led the division with 484 scratch (157, 169, 158) and added 213 pins of handicap to finish first at 718, while Armen used a high game of 214 to get to 703 (529 scratch; 174 handicap).
Third place during Round 1 went to Michael Domicolo of Oswego, New York, who used games of 204, 227 and 257 to get to 688 scratch, to which three pins of handicap were added to give Domicolo a final opening-round total of 691.
75 and older:
Dave Halte of Alda, Nebraska, put up the division’s highest Day 1 total, using 632 scratch (235, 182, 215) and 72 pins of handicap to end the opening round with a mark of 704.
Robert Usagawa of Hilo, Hawaii, used games of 172, 203 and 172 to author 547 scratch, which was combined with 147 pins of handicap to give him a second-place total of 694.
Fred Risch of Anchorage, Alaska, finished Round 1 in third place in the division at 686 (599 scratch; 87 handicap).
All 377 competitors will return to bowl another three-game qualifying block at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley on Thursday, and the top six scorers in each division after six games, including handicap, will advance to Friday’s championship rounds, which are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Eastern.
Qualifying scores will not be carried over to the championship rounds, but bonus pins will be awarded to each player based on his or her qualifying position. The top qualifier in the division will receive 50 bonus pins, while the second seed will receive 40. Bonus pins will decrease by 10 pins for each spot, with the sixth qualifier receiving zero bonus pins.
The championship rounds will feature three games, and the bowlers authoring the highest totals, including handicap and bonus pins, will earn titles.
