BATON ROUGE, La. - The members of Sport Bowl 2 of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, use the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships as a chance to get away from home for a few days and have a good time.
They found an even better time on the lanes at the Raising Cane's River Center on Wednesday as they took the lead in Ruby Team at the 2017 event with a 2,158 total.
Led by Jessica Morford's 599 series, Sport Bowl 2 used games of 681, 730 and 747 to surpass Chevrolet of Helena of Helena, Montana, which previously held the lead with 2,105.
Morford was joined at the River Center by 1998 Division 1 Doubles champion Julie Jarman (546), Allison Coy (512) and Tonya Van Veldhuizen (501).
While focusing on having a fun, the thought of taking the lead did not necessarily cross the minds of the Sport Bowl 2 team members, and the team was shocked to learn of the news.
"We all come to have fun," said Coy, who made her 18th USBC Women's Championships appearance. "We all get along, and it's fun to get out and see the world while we bowl."
The team, which has been together for the past three events, also is thankful for their group's coordinator, Betty Fokken, who helps brings them together for the Women's Championships each year.
"Betty's our bowling mom, and she gets the eight of us together each year," Coy said. "She's just an inspiration, and she likes to have a lot of fun, too."
Ruby Team features four-player teams with combined entering averages of 650-724.
The Topaz Doubles leaderboard also saw a pair of new names at the top Wednesday as Janice York of Clarendon, Arkansas, and Terri McIntosh of Humphrey, Arkansas, moved into the lead at the River Center.
York and McIntosh nearly matched each other's efforts during doubles on their way to a 907 total, passing Jaclyn Meyer and Victoria Krukowski of Ottawa, Ohio, who previously held the top spot with 872.
York led the effort with games of 163, 147 and 144 for a 454 series, and McIntosh added 175, 159 and 119 for a 453 total.
Topaz Doubles includes bowlers with combined entering averages of 259 and below.
