Semifinalists set for Intercollegiate Singles
April 16, 2013
LINCOLN, Neb. - Bowling in front of the home crowd at Sun Valley Lanes and fresh off an NCAA title over the weekend, Nebraska's Kristina Mickelson led the way as the top four women and top four men were determined Tuesday for the 2013 xbowling Intercollegiate Singles Championships semifinals.
Mickelson is joined in the women's semifinals by a trio of Wichita State bowlers - Jazreel Tan, Daria Kovalova and Tannya Roumimper. The men's semifinals include Mike Conn of Morehead State, Brock Finch of Urbana, Ronnie Fujita of Lindenwood and Aaron Lorincz of Saginaw Valley State.
The semifinals will take place Saturday and will be taped for broadcast on CBS Sports Network in May.
En route to the semifinals, Mickelson bowled a perfect game in the second round in a 758-661 three-game victory over Clarke's Morgan O'Brien. She defeated Sacred Heart's Jackie Carbonetto, 720-618, in the quarterfinals.
"Being able to find so much success at the end of my career is like a fairy tale ending," said Mickelson, who broke her bowling arm in a car accident last fall. "To come back from breaking my arm to help my team win the national title and now to make the semifinals against a field of ridiculously talented bowlers feels amazing."
In the other women's quarterfinals, Tan defeated Jessica Earnest of Vanderbilt, 681-651, Kovalova took down Breanne Underwood of William Penn, 741-582, and Roumimper defeated teammate Alexis Ijams, 629-569.
Conn, a former Junior Team USA member, earned the top seed after eight games of qualifying on Tuesday morning and made it into the semifinals with a 580-515 quarterfinal victory over Jacob Boresch of Clarke.
"I had a lot of breaks go my way and I felt like the bowling gods were on my side today," Conn said. "I managed to put it all together to win matches."
Fujita, meanwhile, put up big numbers on his way to the semifinals, firing a 781 series in the second round and a 794 series that included a 300 game in a quarterfinal victory over teammate Jeremy Zimmerly.
Finch defeated AJ Johnson of McKendree, 711-683, and Lorincz defeated William Penn's Brandon Barboza, 698-597, in the other men's quarterfinals.
The focus now shifts to the xbowling Intercollegiate Team Championships, which begin Thursday at Sun Valley Lanes. All qualifying and match play rounds leading up to the TV finals will be broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV.
