ARLINGTON, Texas –
The opportunity to compete against the best women bowlers in the world has drawn international players, and a few national teams, to the Professional Women’s Bowlers Association Tour this season. It also brought back one of the best collegiate bowlers in recent history.

Tannya Roumimper, a native of Indonesia and a former standout at Wichita State, will face Stefanie Johnson of Grand Prairie, Texas, in the opening match when the stepladder finals of the PWBA Greater Detroit Open air Tuesday at 9 p.m. Eastern on CBS Sports Network.

The TV finals of the PWBA Greater Detroit Open are a prime example of the presence of international players on the PWBA Tour this season. The winner of the Roumimper-Johnson match will meet Malaysia’s Li Jane Sin for the right to challenge top-seed, and another former Wichita State star, Rocio Restrepo of Colombia for the title.

While at Wichita State, Roumimper was a two-time National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association Most Valuable Player and had a couple of runner-up finishes in the Intercollegiate Singles Championships. She graduated in 2014 and had a third-place finish at the United States Bowling Congress Queens before returning home to Indonesia to see her family.

But the PWBA Tour eventually pulled her back to the United States. She cashed in her first event this season, the PWBA Storm Sacramento Open, and then had a 16th-place finish at the USBC Queens.

While she missed the cut at the PWBA Wichita Open, she would bounce back to finish 10th at the Pepsi PWBA Lincoln Open, just missing the group stepladder.

“I’ve always wanted to bowl on the PWBA Tour,” Roumimper said. “When I was growing up, I watched all these ladies compete. When I graduated from college, the PWBA was coming back, and I was excited.”

A member of the Indonesia National Team since 2005, Roumimper has made her mark on the international scene, having won the 2010 Thailand International Open and the 2009 Indonesia International Open. In 2015, she won silver in doubles and bronze in the Masters at the 28th South East Asian Games. She also became just the second woman to capture the World Bowling Tour H.H. Emir Cup title in Doha, Qatar.

Allie Ijams first met Roumimper during their freshman year at Wichita State. She said after they made the team, it didn’t take long to see they had similar “intensity” on the lanes and both were very driven. They not only would be teammates, but also roommates.

“Tannya is a very headstrong person – seldom does she take ‘no’ for an answer,” said Ijams, also a PWBA member. “She works hard, she stays mentally strong, and she pushes onward. I admire her fortitude.”

Roumimper recently took a break from the PWBA Tour to compete in the Hong Kong International Open – the Indonesia Team has a private sponsor from Hong Kong – and she took third against a strong field at the event held this past weekend. She’ll return for the PBA/PWBA Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles on July 29-31 in Houston, and the U.S. Women’s Open, set for Aug. 1-7 at Stardust Bowl in Addison, Illinois.

“I know that if I can bowl this tour, it will make me a better bowler because I will learn so much,” Roumimper said. “The format is different, and week by week you have to come back every Thursday and be sharp and ready to compete. That made me want to bowl the PWBA Tour.”

The qualifying, match play and group stepladder rounds of the PWBA Greater Detroit Open took place June 17-18 at Super Bowl in Canton, Michigan. The stepladder finals were held at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley on June 26 following the PWBA Players Championship.
