Retro Roll: 1953 Open Championships
Only the famed Budweiser team—which included names like Dick Weber and Don Carter—assembled as much talent as the Stroh's in the storied era of bowling’s beer teams. The team of Buzz Fazio, Ed Lubanski, Tom Hennessey, Tom Lindemann and Lee Jouglard boasted so much talent that every one of them would one day become a USBC Hall of Famer.
By the time all was said and done at the 1953 USBC Open Championships, featured in the video below, Fazio would go on to win the 1955 Masters and, at age 60 in 1968, come within one frame of doing it again. Lubanski would go on to become one of just three bowlers to claim four titles in a single USBC Open Championships tournament in 1959, and Hennessey would win four Open Championships titles in four years between 1962-65. Lee Jouglard already was a USBC Masters champion, winning the inaugural Masters in 1951, and Tom Lindemann already owned an all-events title.
