Registration for 2020 Open Championships opens March 11; deadline extended for 2019 event
March 08, 2019
ARLINGTON, Texas – The 2020 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships will take place in Reno, Nevada, and, in addition to new squad times for the national event, bowlers will see quite a few changes when they step into the National Bowling Stadium.
Registration for the 2020 USBC Open Championships will open Monday, March 11, at noon (Eastern). Visit BOWL.com/2020Reno for complete information and to register.
Though the National Bowling Stadium has become a familiar stop for the Open Championships, the tournament last visited the historic venue in 2016. The NBS will have much different look for returning competitors.
An ongoing renovation project at the NBS will transform the concourse, with the settee expanded and the iconic NBS bleachers taking on a new look. The makeover includes moving the concession stand and accompanying restrooms to allow more open space for events and activities. The venue’s air-conditioning system also has been completely rebuilt.
The tournament itself also will have a new look as starting with the 2020 event, only four bowlers will compete on each pair during doubles/singles (D/S) squads. The change will reduce the time needed to complete a squad, allowing the Open Championships to have four D/S squads, instead of the current three.
At the 2020 Open Championships, doubles/singles squads will take place at 7 a.m., 10 a.m., 5 p.m. and 11:45 p.m., with team squads scheduled for 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.
For bowlers who still want to take part in the 2019 Open Championships, registration for the event has been extended to April 15.
The 2019 Open Championships, which kick off this weekend in Las Vegas, expects to have approximately 10,500 teams compete at the South Point Bowling Plaza. It would mark a two percent increase over the number of teams that competed in the event’s last Las Vegas appearance in 2017 and would make it the largest Open Championships since the 2012 event in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
