PTQ completes field at 2017 U.S. Open

PTQ RESULTS

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -
The field for the 2017 U.S. Open now is set with the conclusion of the pre-tournament qualifier Wednesday at Flamingo Bowl.

Total pinfall for eight games determined the 19 competitors who earned spots into the 144-player U.S. Open field. The other 125 players competing this week earned invitations to the event based on their on-lane performances throughout 2016.

Brett Cunningham of nearby Clay, New York, paced the field Wednesday, firing 257 in his final game for an eight-game total of 1,658, a 207.25 average. Matt Sanders of Evansville, Indiana, was second with 1,651, and Team USA's Nick Pate of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, finished third with 1,648.

Cunningham, a 29-year-old right-hander, lives approximately 10 minutes away from Flamingo Bowl, so his familiarity with the 40-lane center and ease of travel helped him feel comfortable as he made his move in the final game.

"It's nice to be able to sleep in my own bed and come out here and bowl," said Cunningham, who won the 2014 Professional Bowlers Association Sands Regency Tri Region Challenge in Reno, Nevada. "I tried to keep my angles in front of me for the most part and not give the pocket away, and scores were low, so spares were important. Hopefully, this is a sign for how the rest of the week will go. I haven't had much success out here, but I hope this will lead to bigger and better things."

The final spot in the main field went to Brandon Boyer of Hudson Falls, New York. Boyer posted a 1,496 total, a 187 average, to earn his spot.

The tournament's official practice sessions will begin Thursday at 9 a.m. Eastern, and qualifying will begin Friday at 8 a.m. Eastern.

Qualifying will consist of three eight-game blocks over three days. After 24 games, the field will be cut to the top fourth (36 players) for Monday's cashers' round, which will consist of an additional eight games to determine the top 24 players for round-robin match play.

Match play will begin Monday at 6 p.m. Eastern with the first of three eight-game rounds and resume Tuesday at 10 a.m. Eastern, concluding with a position round. The five finalists for the stepladder finals will be determined by total pinfall, including bonus pins, for 56 games.

The stepladder finals will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network on Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern. The champion will earn the $30,000 top prize and coveted green jacket.

The U.S. Open is the fourth of five major championships on the 2017 PBA Tour schedule and is conducted jointly by the United States Bowling Congress and Bowling Proprietors' Association of America.

Each round of the 2017 U.S. Open leading up to the stepladder finals will be broadcast live on Xtra Frame, the exclusive online bowling channel for the PBA.
