Pennsylvania bowler enjoys camaraderie on way to 50 Women's Championships

ADDISON, Ill. - For Sue Werkheiser of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, reaching 50 consecutive years at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships has been a lot about the people she has met along the way.
"Camaraderie" was a term often used by Werkheiser when describing the achievement, and she was awarded with a plaque, chevron and necklace to commemorate her dedication Tuesday at Stardust Bowl.
Over these 50 years at the event, Werkheiser now has been to 35 cities in 24 states, beginning in 1971 with a group from New York in Atlanta. That first year has stuck with her throughout the years.
"I love Atlanta and that group," Werkheiser said. "My coach at the time lived in the area as well."
She bowled with that group from New York for many years after her debut, before joining up with a local team in Pennsylvania about three years ago to now travel to the USBC Women's Championships.
She has loved every minute spending time with the two groups.
"The camaraderie has been what is special to me," she said. "Bowling with many people over the years I now consider friends. It's been a lot of fun over the years, going from that original New York group to these ladies from my home state, just so much fun."
Werkheiser has no plans on stopping anytime soon, and she's already planning for 2023 and her 51st year of bowling the Women's Championships in Las Vegas.
"Lord willing, I'll be in Vegas next year," she said.
In this year's event, Werkheiser rolled sets of 479 in team, 437 in doubles and 425 in singles for an all-events total of 1,341.
