March 07, 2011
The Ohio High School Athletic Association held its state championships for bowling on March 4-5 at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl.
In the girls' division, St. Mary's Memorial High School was nearly eliminated during qualifying but survived a roll-off against Beavercreek to earn the eighth and final spot in the championship bracket. The championship round was best-of-five Baker matches and Memorial proceeded to knock out top qualifier Coldwater, 3-2, including a 175-171 victory in the deciding game, in the first match. Memorial then topped Troy, 3-2, and took the title with a 3-1 victory over Hubbard.
Crystal Boyer, a senior from Coldwater High School, shot 661 to take the girls' individual title. Wayne junior Kayla Cummings had a 637 to edge Westerville Central's Mary Wells (630) for second with Kristin Nelson (621) of Fairfield taking fourth and Kayla Miller (618) of Piqua finishing fifth.
Only 10 pins separated the top three teams in boys' qualifying with Wapakoneta High School taking the top spot followed by Kettering Fairmont and Troy. In the championship round, Wapakoneta and Troy met for title with Troy winning, 3-2, in a match that saw three of the games decided by eight or fewer pins.
Struthers junior Corey Bayus had a 697 to take the boys' individual title with junior Ryan Wolfe (674) of Kettering Fairmont finishing second. Jamie Robinson (673) of Westerville Central took third followed by Garfield senior Kyle Bolton (660) and Troy sophomore A.J. Bigelow (651).
