North Dakota volunteer selected for USBC award

ARLINGTON, Texas – Sheila McClenathan of Bismarck, North Dakota, has been involved in youth bowling on the local, state and national levels for more than four decades and has been selected as the United States Bowling Congress Youth Volunteer of the Year.
The winner of the prestigious award, which recognizes an adult volunteer who has displayed outstanding efforts to foster, organize and promote youth bowling, is selected by the International Bowling Campus Youth Committee.
“It is absolutely incredible to receive an award for doing something that provides its own rewards,” McClenathan said. “Seeing new bowlers beam with pride when they receive their first award, and then watching them mature into young adults, never gets old.”
McClenathan, who is a retired water pollution program administrator for the state of North Dakota, serves as a director and association manager for the Bismarck-Mandan USBC Youth board. She joined the board as secretary-treasurer in 1970 and continues to serve as the championships tournament manager.
“During my last year as a junior bowler, the local bowling proprietors approached me about taking over as secretary-treasurer for our local junior bowling association,” she said. “I was elected at the next meeting; the rest is history.”
She was a regional tournament supervisor for the Young American Bowling Alliance (YABA) for more than 20 years and was a YABA National Sounding Board member for six years. She served as tournament manager for the YABA event run in conjunction with the Women’s International Bowling Congress tournament when it took place in Bismarck in 1989.
McClenathan, who served on the Bismarck-Mandan WBA board for nine years, also is an accomplished bowler and was inducted into the Bismarck-Mandan WBA Hall of Fame in 1999 for Superior Performance. She recently was honored by the association with their Special Award for her commitment to the sport, one of the numerous awards she has received from the Bismarck-Mandan BA, WBA and YABA associations.
She was honored with the North Dakota WBA President’s Mystery Woman Award in 2004 for her outstanding service.
McClenathan will be recognized at the 2015 USBC Convention in Omaha, Nebraska, for her selection as the USBC Youth Volunteer of the Year. BOWL.com will live stream the USBC Convention, set for April 27-30 in Omaha, Nebraska, including the awards presentations.
