INDIANAPOLIS - The Newman women and William Penn men showcased their poise in match play Sunday on the way to victory at the 2018 Hoosier Classic.
The 49th edition of the Hoosier Classic was the final Tier 1 event of the 2017-2018 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season and marked the end of the regular season.
A total of 66 women's teams and 78 men's teams bowled six traditional games Saturday at Western Bowl, and all teams returned Sunday for 15 Baker games to conclude qualifying. Total pinfall determined the eight teams in each division to advance to the match-play bracket.
The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the bracket were contested in a best-of-three Baker format, while the championship round featured a best-of-five Baker match.
The Newman women improved on their semifinal appearance at the 2017 Hoosier Classic and bested Grand View in the title match in 2018, 3-1. The win also gave Newman its first Tier 1 title of the 2017-2018 season.
The Jets lineup this weekend in Indianapolis included Ashton Anderson, Miranda Hejny, Becca King, Kelly Machacek, Kristen Machacek, Carley Sullivan, Leanne Vastbinder and Haley Williams.
The Jets entered match play as the No. 2 seed and defeated No. 6 St. Francis-Illinois in the semifinals, 2-0.
Grand View, the No. 5 seed, advanced to the finals by sweeping No. 1 Wichita State, 2-0. Wichita State entered the 2018 event as the four-time defending champion.
Robert Morris-Illinois' Mattie Brandos finished with the top individual score, posting a 1,272 total Saturday. Webber International's Caitlyn Johnson was second with 1,260, and St. Francis-Illinois' Abigail Ragsdale (1,259), Notre Dame-Ohio's Alisha Noon (1,255) and Wichita State's Sydney Brummett (1,253) also made the all-tournament team.
William Penn, the No. 7 seed entering bracket play, defeated top qualifier Wichita State in the championship match, 3.5-.5. After rolling to a 169-169 tie in the opening match, the Statesmen averaged 211 on the way to three consecutive wins and their first Tier 1 victory of the season.
The Statesmen's lineup at the 2018 Hoosier Classic included Quincy Bruce, Braxton Coble, David Decker, Josh Fane, Aleksander Kostric, Rok Kostric, Curtis Majka and Nick Walker.
William Penn swept No. 6 Pikeville to advance to the finals, 2-0, while Wichita State recorded a 2-0 victory in the semifinals against No. 5 Savannah College of Arts and Design-Savannah.
Defending men's champion Midland did not advance to bracket play and finished 23rd.
Alex Glinski of Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah rolled 278 in his final game Saturday to earn the top spot in the men's individual standings, finishing his six game-block with a 1,429 total, a 238. 1 average. Wichita State's Cortez Schenck was second with 1,407, while Vincennes' Tyler Perry (1,391), Pikeville's Matthew Cleary (1,385) and Davenport's Sean Taylor (1,360) followed in the standings.

With the regular season wrapped up, the top teams in the country now will prepare for the postseason. Sectional assignments will be announced Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. Eastern during the Intercollegiate Team Championships Sectional Assignments Show, which will be broadcast live on BowlTV.
Sectionals will take place March 9-11 at four locations across the country. The sectional locations for 2018 are Stratford, New Jersey; Smyrna, Tennessee; Fairview Heights, Illinois; and Dallas.
The 2018 Intercollegiate Team and Singles Championships will be held April 16-21 at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska.
