RENO, Nev. - Beckie Eynon of Apalachin, N.Y., has been competing at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships since 1996 but never has found the success she desired. After her performance at the National Bowling Stadium this week, she set the mark all bowlers will be looking up to as she took the lead in Scratch All-Events.

Eynon, a Southern Tier USBC Hall of Famer, rolled a 722 series in doubles, 708 in team and 663 in singles on her way to a 2,093 all-events score. Mihoko Matsuoka of Japan previously held the top spot with 2,061.

With a previous high of 1,834 at the 2007 USBC Women's Championships in Charlotte, N.C., the 38-year-old right-hander credits a pitch change in her bowling equipment to her recent wave of success at home and at the Women's Championships. Just a week before heading to Reno, Eynon finished one win away from making the stepladder finals at the New York State USBC Queens Championships.

"My fiancé‚ changed my pitches right before the New York State Queens," said Eynon, who made her 17th consecutive Women's Championships appearance. "I finished well at that event, and then I came out here and bowled my butt off. It's definitely my best performance here."

Eynon knew she had put together a good tournament score but was unaware she had climbed to the top of the standings. Her philosophy on the lanes has her striving for bigger and better performances every time she laces up her shoes.

"I wasn't quite sure where things stood," Eynon said. "I want each year to be better than the year before, the best ever. After team last night, I knew I had to finish strong."

With the 2012 event lasting until July 8, Eynon still has more than two months to see if she'll take home the Scratch All-Events title. Her display on the lanes, however, has her leaving The Biggest Little City with the performance she always has wanted at the Women's Championships.

"I'm just very pleased with how I bowled," she said. "I said to myself, 'has it been different in the past years, or have I finally got myself squared away?' I don't know if it'll stand, but if I finish in the top 10, it would be a blessing."

Eynon entered the 2012 tournament with an average of 226, which placed her in the Diamond Division. Since her average is more than 220, she didn't receive any additional handicap but finds herself sitting in sixth place in Diamond All-Events. Matsuoka currently holds the lead with 2,214.

The top scratch scores in team, doubles, singles and all-events will be recognized as the overall tournament champions at the 2012 Women's Championships.
