WICHITA, Kan. - Margaret Randall of Pine Valley, New York, and Vickie Tobias of Bath, New York, moved into the Emerald Doubles lead Monday after combining for a 1,114 series at the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships.
Randall had games of 169, 215 and 183 for a series of 567 at Northrock Lanes, and Tobias added games of 178, 189 and 180 for 547.
Randall said that they both lived around the same area, but they didn't meet until a local tournament.
"She came from Corning to my little town and she bowled, and her team got first," said Tobias, who made her eighth USBC Women's Championships appearance. "It was like, 'Who are they?'"
The two started bowling together at the 2008 Women's Championships, which was held in Detroit.
While this is not the duos first time moving up individually, it is their first time advancing to the top of the standings in doubles.
The pair joked about how Tobias usually leads the doubles effort, but Randall was able to get lined up after struggling Sunday during her team event.
"I felt like I had to hold up my end of the deal with her," said Randall, who made her ninth appearance. "I needed to finally bowl well in doubles and sure enough, I did beat her. I actually held my end up this year in doubles."
Randall's strong effort in doubles also translated into success in singles, too. She rolled games of 223, 162 and 181 for a 566 total to take over the Sapphire Singles lead, while her overall effort also helped her to the top of the leaderboard in Sapphire All-Events with 1,527. She had 394 in team.
Tobias also moved toward the top of the Ruby All-Events standings, moving into second place by adding sets of 589 in team and 505 in singles for a 1,641 total. Karen Jost of Tumwater, Washington, leads Ruby All-Events with 1,732.
Randall said this is very exciting, and they are looking forward to coming in strong at next year's Women's Championships at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas.
"We have already starting planning for next year, going to Las Vegas," Randall said.
Bowlers in Emerald Doubles have combined entering averages of 320-349, while Sapphire Singles and All-Events features bowlers with entering averages of 145-159. Ruby All-Events consists of bowlers with averages of 175-189.
