Minnesota pair sets doubles pace at USBC Women's Championships
April 11, 2011
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - On the fourth day of competition at the 2011 USBC Women's Championships, Tracey Magnuson of Faribault, Minn., and Diane Marget of Champlin, Minn., set a high benchmark for other hopeful duos as they took the early lead in Scratch and Diamond Doubles.
Despite a couple of splits along the way, the two right-handers were confident and consistent and surged into the lead with a combined 502 in their final game.
Marget paced the pair with games of 212, 256 and 248 for a 716 series, while Magnuson added 192, 257 and 254 for 702 for a 1,419 scratch effort. An additional 81 pins of handicap helped them to a 1,500 total at the Oncenter Convention Center on Sunday.
"This is awesome," said Marget, who made her 27th Women's Championships appearance. "This is always what you want to do when you come here. You want to take over first place and put up scores that lead the tournament. Our goal was 1,400, and after the second game, we looked at each other and said, 'we can do this.'"
Marget and Magnuson, both are members of the Minneapolis Hall of Fame. Marget also is enshrined in the Minnesota Hall of Fame.
"Diane and I have bowled together for a very long time," said Magnuson, who made her 16th trip to the tournament. "To be at the national tournament and both shoot 700 at the same time, then to know it's going to be on the leaderboard, is pretty big. It's very exciting."
Marget also has competed at the USBC Open Championships, so she's familiar with the unique Stadium setting, but she really found the newly-renovated Oncenter to her liking. The venue includes 48 lanes, the world's largest mobile scoreboard and seating for 500. This year's Women's Championships opened April 7 and will run until July 3. During the tournament's 88-day run, more than 30,000 bowlers will make their way to Syracuse.
"I love the arena setting." Marget said. "It's a huge stage, and it's exciting just to be up there. We had our stroke, and we were there. It was a blast."
The Diamond Division includes bowlers with averages of 180 and higher, with handicap based on 220. For doubles, the pair must have a combined average of 360 or above. Handicap is 100 percent of 440.
