Minnesota bowler leads Classified All-Events at 2024 Open Championships

LAS VEGAS – With less than a month left at the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships at the South Point Bowling Plaza, there has been plenty of movement on the tournament’s leaderboard.
In the Classified Division, there have been some great performances in the last week, highlighted by a new leader in all-events.
Aider Xiong of Maplewood, Minnesota, is the new leader in Classified All-Events with a total score of 1,729 in his tournament debut. His scores consisted of 623 in doubles, a 592 set in team and 514 in singles.
The 42-year-old left-hander, was able to withstand two late opens in his final game of singles to get past Leon Gibson of Albany, Georgia, who had held the lead since April 3 with 1,725.
Xiong was joined by friends during his team event at the Bowling Plaza, and their team finished with a 2,615 total in the Standard Division. The team also consisted of Paseuth Vang, Jun Vang, Chee Lor and Rino Panganiban.
In doubles, Xiong teamed up with Lor as they finished with a score of 1,118 between the two in the Standard Division. Lor had a 495 series.
During his time on the lanes, Xiong and his teammates had no idea he was bowling well enough to take the lead. He hopes the score will be enough to maintain the top spot.
“I feel happy and very good – maybe even a little hungry,” Xiong said. “It is a surprise for me.
“Getting that phone call at the end would be very exciting. It would just simply be amazing.”
The Classified Division features bowlers with entering averages of 155 and below.
The 2024 Open Championships got underway Feb. 23 and will run through July 29 at the South Point Bowling Plaza. The tournament is scheduled to feature more than 11,000 teams and 55,000 bowlers making their way to compete in Las Vegas.
