MELAKA, Malaysia -
Team USA's Tennelle Milligan solidified her place among the top 24 Tuesday, while Walter Ray Williams Jr. continued to struggle in qualifying at the 2009 QubicaAMF World Cup.

Milligan moved up four spots to 11th place with a 16-game total of 3,317 at Melaka International Bowling Center. Williams, meanwhile, sits in 34th place with 3,265, which is 30 pins outside of the first cut with eight games of qualifying remaining Wednesday.

Milligan, who sits 173 pins above the first cut number, put together a consistent eight-game block Tuesday with a high game of 240 and a low game of 199 for a total of 1,710. But she said her carry was never good enough to allow her to string the strikes she needed to put together a really big set.

"I felt like I physically threw the ball well, my look was really good but then my carry was sub par all night," Milligan said. "In all, I'm thrilled that I was able to move up a few spots, but it was a frustrating day in the fact that I could never get any momentum."

Zara Giles of England maintained her lead with 3,492, an average of 218.25. Evgenia Tsarkova of Russia is second with 3,471, while Canada's Caroline Lagrange is third with 3,459.

Williams entered Tuesday's second round with a different game plan, but it only yielded an improvement of two positions in the standings. Instead of playing an inside line like he did Monday, Williams moved outside.

He started with games of 206, 215 and 267 before slowing down with games of 181, 194 and 228. But disaster struck in the seventh game as he shot 147 before closing with 210. In all, he totaled 1,648, an average of 206, and just 31 pins better than Monday.

"I felt like I bowled better today, but I had the really bad game and that's what killed me," Williams said. "Looking at the lane pattern, it seems like there should be a clearly defined area to play the lane, but I just haven't quite found it yet."

Korea's Choi Yong-Kyu took the men's lead with 3,666, an average of just over 229 per game. Sweden's Martin Larsen is second with 3,573, while Malaysia's Zulmazran Zulkifli is third with 3,534.

All participants will bowl eight additional games of qualifying Wednesday with the top 24 men and top 24 women advancing to eight more games Wednesday night. The top eight men and top eight women then advance to Thursday, where the field will be paired down to the top three men and top three women for the semifinals and finals.

USBC will partner with BowlingDigital.com to provide live streaming coverage of the semifinals and finals on BOWL.com on Thursday beginning at approximately Midnight Eastern (9 p.m. Pacific on Wednesday). Earlier rounds may be streamed live if possible.
