Michigan bowler has memorable week in Reno

RENO, Nev. - Dave Ewald of Macomb, Mich., takes full advantage of the USBC Open Championships experience each year, and that includes making time to compete at the nearby Storm Bowlers Journal Championships, presented by USBC.
This week, the 32-year-old right-hander posted games of 277, 278, 193 and 244 at the Bowlers Journal Championships and moved into the top spot in Open Singles with a 992 total. Pat McGainey Jr. of Baltimore previously held the lead with 976.
"Well, I am a full-roller," said Ewald, who won the 2002 Mini-Eliminator. "All my buddies say I have a trick roll, but my ball was able to float through the heads and read the lanes at the right spot. I had good ball reaction, made some good ball choices and threw some really good shots. It also helped that I was able to stay in the same part of the lane."
Ewald's success continued at the Open Championships as he helped S & B Pro Shop of Clinton Township, Mich., into second place in Regular Team with a 3,347 total at the National Bowling Stadium on Thursday night.
The group started strong with a 1,128 game and added 1,115 and 1,104 to become the first team to eclipse the 1,100 mark in all three games this year. Ewald led the way with a 758 series and was followed by Mark Moore (717), Bill Orlikowski (665), Nick Wissinger (665) and Kerry Kreft (542).
Ewald, Moore and Kreft all were Regular Team champions at the Stadium in 2004 (S & B Pro Shop 1- 3,268), while Orlikowski rolled an 822 series in doubles at the 1999 event in Syracuse, N.Y., and helped Ottman Enterprises of Troy, Mich., to the Team All-Events crown.
"We put up a pretty good number," said Ewald, who made his 13th Open Championships appearance. "With all the guys that we bring, we knew we still had a good look at Team All-Events, so we knew all the eagles hadn't flown by yet. Kerry struggled this year, but he bowled well and carried us last year. He had a bad ball reaction, and we tried to help him out as much as we could, and we still shot a pretty nice number."
S & B Pro Shop continued to strike Friday and moved into second place in Team All-Events with a 9,920 total. Red Carpet Lanes of Greenfield, Wis., leads with 10,131.
Ewald set the pace with 2,116 and was followed by Moore (2,097), Wissinger (2,091), Kreft (1,818) and Orlikowski (1,798). Ewald, Moore and Wissinger all cracked the top 10 in Regular All-Events. Terrence Syring of Bay City, Mich., leads with 2,155.
