Junior Team USA roster to grow in 2016
September 10, 2014
ARLINGTON, Texas – The Junior Team USA roster will grow to 12 boys and 12 girls in 2016, with nearly all of the spots on the team being earned based on performance.
Junior Team USA, which represents the United States in international youth competition, will be determined at the Junior Gold Championships and the United States Bowling Congress Team USA Trials each year.
A total of six boys and six girls will earn automatic spots on Junior Team USA 2016 at the 2015 Junior Gold Championships presented by Storm, Roto Grip and Master that will take place in July in Chicago. Four boys and four girls will earn automatic spots at the Team USA Trials in January 2016. The final two boys and two girls spots will be selections announced at the conclusion of the Team USA Trials.
“We wanted to revamp the process to reward those players who have strong performances at Junior Gold and at Team USA Trials,” USBC Managing Director of National Governing Body Neil Stremmel said. “The quality of youth bowlers competing at these events continues to get stronger each year, which helps keep the Junior Team USA program strong.”
To be eligible for Junior Team USA in 2016, bowlers must be U.S. citizens and be age 20 or younger as of Jan, 1 2016. The date and age requirement is established by World Bowling, which governs international competition.
Here is how the Junior Team USA spots will be determined for 2016:
2015 JUNIOR GOLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The top four male and top four female age-eligible bowlers in the U20 divisions at the conclusion of 25 qualifying games at the Junior Gold Championships automatically qualify for Junior Team USA 2016. If the top qualifiers in the division do not meet the age requirement, the selection goes to the next age-eligible athlete based on the qualifying standings after 25 games.
In addition, the top two male and top two female age-eligible finalists in the double-elimination match-play bracket of the U20 divisions automatically qualify for Junior Team USA 2016. If the top qualifiers in the division do not meet the age requirement, the spot goes to the next age-eligible athlete based on the qualifying standings after 25 games.
If one or both of the two finalists from the double-elimination match-play bracket already were one of the top four in qualifying, that spot will be awarded to the next age-eligible athlete based on the qualifying standings after 25 games.
2016 USBC TEAM USA TRIALS
The top four males and four females at the 2016 USBC Team USA Trials automatically qualify for Junior Team USA 2016 provided they are not already on Junior Team USA 2016.
The four individuals earning the spots are determined by the final standings from the 2016 USBC Team USA Trials. These four athletes can be USBC Youth or Adult members as long as they meet the age requirements. If any of the above are not age-eligible, the automatic spot goes to the next age-eligible qualifier in order.
SELECTIONS
Two males and two females will be chosen by the National Selection Committee from a pool of athletes who competed at the 2015 Junior Gold Championships or who competed at the 2016 USBC Team USA Trials. The selections will be announced at the conclusion of the Team USA Trials.
U15 DEVELOPMENTAL TEAM
The top age-eligible male and female bowler in the U15 divisions at the conclusion of 25 qualifying games and the U15 bracket champions at Junior Gold automatically qualify for the U15 Developmental Team.
These individuals must be age 15 or younger as of January 1, 2016. If the top qualifier in the division does not meet the age requirement, the spot goes to the next age-eligible athlete. If the winner of the bracket is not age-eligible then the second member of the U15 team will be the next highest age-eligible qualifier after 25 games.
