ARLINGTON, Texas – Junior Team USA suffered a pair of near-misses and was eliminated from medal contention in the mixed team event at the 2024 International Bowling Federation World Youth Championships in Incheon, Korea, on Wednesday.
The American squad of Katelyn Abigania of San Diego; Zach Andresen of Princeton, Minnesota; Jacob Bockstie of Nottingham, Maryland; and Annalise OBryant of Ball Ground, Georgia; went 5-2 during match play at Incheon’s Fiesta Bowling Center thanks to Baker scores of 246, 226, 233, 255, 217, 183 and 207.
Unfortunately, that put the Junior Team USA quartet in a three-way tie with Malaysia and Sweden, both of which also went 5-2.
That meant that a one-game roll off would be needed in order to determine the two teams advancing to the mixed team semifinals.
Abigania, Andresen, Bockstie and OBryant combined to put up a solid score of 216 during the extra game; unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as Malaysia came in with 256, and the Swedes posted 247 to leave Junior Team USA on the outside looking in.
A similar scenario played out for the other American squad of Brandon Bohn of Jackson, New Jersey; Gianna Brandolino of Channahon, Illinois; Braden Mallasch of Waupaca, Wisconsin; and Jillian Martin of Stow, Ohio.
That foursome used games of 225, 196, 212, 240, 191, 197 and 176 to post a 4-3 record during the seven-game match-play block.
But the hosts from Korea also came in with a record of 4-3, which meant another roll off.
Bohn, Brandolino, Mallasch and Martin gave it everything they had, but Korea got the better of the extra game, topping the American squad by a final score of 202-176 to punch their ticket to the semifinals and end Junior Team USA’s bid for a mixed team medal.
One round later, Sweden rallied from an 0-1 deficit to defeat the Czech Republic 3-2 (189-194, 215-200 and 230-169) in one semifinal, while Korea topped Malaysia by the same margin (233-234, 181-174 and 248-212) in the other.
The mixed team final between Korea and Sweden will take place on Thursday as will the gold-medal matches in singles, doubles and team competition.
The 2024 World Youth Championships, which features teams from 39 different countries, began on July 9 and will end on Thursday with final-round action in each event and their accompanying medal ceremonies.
