Johnson, Suartz lead CofC singles

LAKE WALES, Fla. - Team USA's Liz Johnson and Brazil's Marcelo Suartz took the lead after the opening round of singles Wednesday at the 2012 Pan American Bowling Confederation Champion of Champions.

Liz Johnson Queens 2012Johnson fired a six-game total of 1,337 (222.8 average) to lead the women's field, while Suartz shot 1,457 (242.8 average) to top the men's division at the Kegel Training Center. A total of 18 countries are represented in the event, which features one man and one woman from each country.

The bowlers will bowl six final games Thursday to determine the singles medalists. The top eight in each division will also advance to Saturday's singles Masters match-play competition.

Johnson started the day with games of 195, 224 and 208 before turning it up a notch in the final three games with 216, 258 and 236. She leads Guatemala's Sophia Granda by 22 pins. Mexico's Aseret Zetter is third at 1,283.

Suartz fired 796 in his final three games to lead Colombia's Andres Gomez, who is second at 1,377. Canada's Dan MacLelland and Mexico's Ernesto Franco are tied for third at 1,366. Team USA's Steve Smith sits in eighth with 1,250.
