Jackson State tops qualifying at SWAC Women’s Championship

ARLINGTON, Texas – Jackson State claimed the top seed for match play at the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Bowling Championship, leading the six-team field after Friday’s five games of qualifying at the International Training and Research Center.
The Lady Tigers, who won their second consecutive regular-season title, finished qualifying with a 4,853 pinfall total to earn the No. 1 seed and an opening-round bye for Saturday’s double-elimination match play. Texas Southern posted 1,017 in its final game to finish second, and also earned a first-round bye, with 4,651. Alabama State qualified third with 4,616 followed by defending champion Prairie View A&M (4,605), Alabama A&M (3,432) and Grambling State (3,286).
SWAC Bowler of the Year Kaila Ryan of Alabama State led all individuals Friday with a 1,028 total (205.6 average). Jackson State’s Laura Uzzell (1,019) and Paola Estrada (1,015) were second and third, respectively, followed by Texas Southern’s Jaden Takayesu (1,009) and Jackson State’s Dyana Bakar (1,005).
Saturday’s match play will be live streamed on BOWL.com’s BowlTV starting at 10:30 a.m. Eastern and Sunday’s finals will be taped for broadcast on ESPNU on April 3 at 10:30 p.m. Eastern.
