RENO, Nev. – In a high-scoring Day 2 at Team USA Trials in Reno, Nevada, two youth bowlers led the way on the 36-foot oil pattern that saw the first 300 thrown for this year’s event at the National Bowling Stadium.
On the men’s side, Dylan Jablonski of Canton, Michigan, averaged over 242 to lead the way and achieved perfection in Game 5, ending the day with a six-game total of 1,454. Through 12 games bowled so far, Jablonski has yet to have a game under 200 in his debut Team USA Trials appearance.
He has taken full advantage of what the first two days of competition have given.
“After the practice session (on Thursday), I realized Day 1 and 2 were definitely going to be my best days,” said Jablonski. “If I only wanted just a few (ranking) points, this was my time to do so.”
Just behind Jablonski in the day’s standings was Robert Vater of Iola, Wisconsin, with 1,427 and Ryan Speer of Beech Grove, Indiana, at 1,413. Carter Wescott of Green Bay, Wisconsin (1,380), and Riley Speer of Beech Grove, Indiana (1,378), rounded out Saturday’s top five. Defending Team USA Trials champion Darren Tang of Las Vegas placed 41st on the with 1,301, while defending U.S. Amateur champion Julian Salinas of Richmond, Texas, was 27th with 1,322.
The 19-year-old Jablonski has only been bowling seriously since his sophomore year of high school, but has rapidly improved in a short time and has the mindset of a veteran heading into the rest of the event.
“It feels really good to have this experience," he explained. "But I got to keep my foot on the pedal and not let up and keep going. Just go one shot at a time.”
In the overall standings, Vater and Jablonski are first and second, respectively, with six and seven ranking points. In third is Ryan Barnes of Denton, Texas (17 points), fourth is Nick Dudeck of Manhattan, Illinois (21), and fifth is C.J. Petrin from Edmond, Oklahoma (25). Tang is eighth with 43 points and Salinas has 52 points, good for 13th place through two rounds.
Earlier in the morning, Gianna Brandolino of Channahon, Illinois, also averaged over 242 for her six games, knocking down a total of 1,455 to lead a block at Team USA Trials for the second straight year.
Brandolino had little issue on the day’s 36-foot oil pattern, starting the day with 245, 277 and 266 for 788, before cooling off slightly with 195 and coming right back with 256 and 216.
“I knew that there were going to be a lot of strikes today and I had to just stay patient,” said Brandolino. “Today was either going to be a super high day or I’d be getting a lot of nine counts day, luckily it was a super high day.”
Second place for the day was Brooke Roberts of Port Orange, Florida, at 1,386, followed closely by Sydney Brummett of Lake Wales, Florida, with 1,383. Hope Gramly of Griffith, Indiana (1,376), and Cassidy Courey of Cedar Rapids, Iowa (1,366), rounded out the top five. Gramly ended her day with a 290 for the women’s high score of the day.
Brandolino, a two-time member of Junior Team USA and 2023 U18 Girls champion at the Junior Gold Championships, isn’t resting on her laurels after today, however.
“Each day is a new day and the pins reset," said Brandolino. "Tomorrow I’ll start out like I did today and use the practice session to my advantage.”
Brandolino also holds the top spot in the overall standings with seven points, while Day 1 leader Katelyn Abigania of San Diego is right behind at eight points. Maranda Pattison of Redwood Valley, California (13 points); Crystal Elliott of Palm Bay, Florida (22); and Anna Warkel of Cedar Rapids, Iowa (28), close out the top five in the overall standings.
In the U.S. Amateur division on the men’s side, Vater, Jablonski and Dudeck hold the top three spots, while Brandolino, Abigania and Warkel currently hold the top three spots in the women’s field. The top three in each U.S. Amateur division will bowl in the stepladder finals following Tuesday’s final qualifying block.
Team USA Trials continues Sunday with the third qualifying block, with the women taking lanes at 11 a.m. Eastern followed by the men at 5 p.m. Eastern.
