RENO, Nev. - Peggy Burchard of Sycamore, Illinois, has been traveling to the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships since 1989, but she'd never seen her name at the top of the tournament's leaderboard.
That changed for Burchard this week at the National Bowling Stadium as she moved into the lead in Amethyst Singles at the 2018 event with a 549 series.
After starting her singles set with games of 166 and 180, Burchard needed a strong final game and delivered, finishing with 203. Carolyn Rice of Casa Grande, Arizona, previously held the lead with 542.
"I knew I was bowling pretty well, but I've never done anything significant here," said Burchard, who made her 28th USBC Women's Championships appearance. "So, I wasn't thinking much about it."
Burchard comes to the Women's Championships each year with a group of ladies to get away from home and have fun. This trip to Reno had a little more meaning for Burchard, because her daughter, who she hasn't seen in more than a year, lives nearby.
"I come for fun every year," Burchard said. "If I bowl well, then good, but if I don't, that's OK. But, this is just the beginning of my trip, since I'm going to see my daughter. This definitely made this trip unforgettable."
Burchard wasn't expecting much after her singles set, and she was in total shock when her friends broke the news that she had taken the lead.
"This is unreal," said Burchard, who added scores of 384 in doubles and 352 in team for an all-events total of 1,285. "I never would have thought that this would happen to someone like me, who just comes for enjoyment, but I am overjoyed."
Amethyst Singles consists of bowlers with entering averages of 130-144.
