Illinois bowler connects for 300 at 2024 USBC Open Championships

LAS VEGAS – Daniel Ahl of Rock Island, Illinois, made the right move in the third game of his team event Thursday to put together the 21st 300 game of the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.

The 40-year-old left-hander had started his 14th appearance at the tournament with games of 175 and 224 before connecting on the final 12 strikes for a 699 series. It marked just the third 300 in team competition this year at the South Point Bowling Plaza.

Ahl tried a different ball at the end of Game 2, and even though the reaction wasn’t bad, he decided to remain with the ball that helped him get into the 220s.

He made an adjustment with his feet, however, and quickly saw the type of motion he was looking for at the Bowling Plaza.

His first two shots in the 10th frame resulted in perfect pocket hits, but things got exciting on his final delivery. The shot was inside of target and ran high on the head pin, but the pins continued to fall in his favor as the 4 and 7 were the last to go.

Ahl added sets of 527 in singles and 519 in doubles to finish the year with a 1,745 all-events total.

The 2024 Open Championships got underway Feb. 23 and will run through July 29 at the South Point Bowling Plaza. The tournament is scheduled to feature more than 11,000 teams and 55,000 bowlers making their way to compete in Las Vegas.
