Howe ties for all-events lead at 2024 USBC Open Championships
April 16, 2024
LAS VEGAS – A slow start to his team competition didn’t deter Collin Howe of Riverton, Illinois, from putting together a big performance at the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.
The 33-year-old right-hander started his ninth appearance at the tournament with a 173 game Saturday at the South Point Bowling Plaza, but he averaged more than 250 over his final eight games across two oil patterns to tie for the lead in Regular All-Events with a 2,179 total.
Howe posted sets of 766 in singles, 736 in doubles and 677 in team to tie the total posted by Kevin McCune of Munster, Indiana, on March 23.
His lowest game after the 173 start was 220, and Howe had four games of 257 or higher along the way.
Entering his final game of singles, Howe needed 289 to tie McCune’s mark, and he started the game with 10 strikes. His 11th delivery got to the pocket and left a 10 pin, meaning he needed to cover the spare to take a share of the lead.
He converted the spare to move alongside McCune for the top spot and post his best performance at the USBC Open Championships by 143 pins.
Howe’s previous top all-events total was during the 2022 event, which also was held at the Bowling Plaza. He finished that appearance with a 2,036 total.

In addition to the success in Regular All-Events, Howe also moved into the top 10 in three other events.
He paired with Tyler Vocks of Taylorville, Illinois, to take over third in Regular Doubles with 1,438, and he’s tied for fourth in Regular Singles with 766.
Howe also helped TBF Purple of Taylorville, Illinois, into eighth place in Team All-Events with 9,581.
Shawn Evans and Nicholas Fisher of Palm Bay, Florida, lead Regular Doubles with 1,531, and Joe Barket of Morro Bay, California, has the top score in Regular Singles with 806. Trip 4 Pro Shop of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, leads Team All-Events with 9,970.
The 2024 Open Championships got underway Feb. 23 and will run through July 29 at the South Point Bowling Plaza. The tournament is scheduled to feature more than 11,000 teams and 55,000 bowlers making their way to compete in Las Vegas.
