Germany leads team event at 2015 World Women's Championships

The team event at the 2015 World Bowling Women's Championships reached its halfway point Friday as Germany conquered the 43-foot Tokyo lane condition to lead the field of 22 teams in contention for medals this week.

The Germans rolled games of 1,059, 1,197 and 1,102 for a 3,358 total, ending the day at the Zayed Sports City's Khalifa International Bowling Centre 54 pins ahead of Sweden's 3,304 total. Singapore is third with 3,273, and Team USA is fourth with 3,264, just 17 pins ahead of Korea.

Teams will return to the lanes Saturday at 12 a.m. Eastern for three games on the 36-foot Los Angeles oil pattern before the field is cut to the top four teams based on the two-day, six-game pinfall totals. The team medal round is scheduled to begin Saturday at 5 a.m. EST.

There are 147 bowlers from 30 countries competing this week for medals in singles, doubles, trios, team, all-events and Masters match play.

Gold, silver and bronze all-events medals will be awarded based on 24-game pinfall totals (six games of singles, doubles, trios and team), and the top 24 in the all-events standings will advance to Masters competition.

Pinfall carries forward, and all 24 players will bowl six additional games to determine the top eight for round-robin match play. After seven games of match play, the field will be narrowed to the top four for Sunday's medal round.

Through 21 games this week, Singapore's Shayna Ng leads all-events with a 4,896 pinfall total, a 233.14 average. Team USA's Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York, is second with 4,835, and Singapore left-hander Cherie Tan is third with 4,809. Jazreel Tan of Singapore is 24th with 4,540, a 216.19 average.

Earlier in the week, Korea won singles and trios, while the United States claimed doubles gold.

Participating countries this year include: Australia, Bahamas, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, England, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Latvia, Malaysia, Mexico, Panama, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, United States, Venezuela and the host country United Arab Emirates.
