LAS VEGAS – Leon Gibson of Albany, Georgia, focused on filling frames during his appearance this week at the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, which helped him take over the top spot in Classified All-Events at the South Point Bowling Plaza.
Gibson, a 39-year-old left-hander, had sets of 616 in doubles, 558 in team and 551 in singles to take the lead by 55 pins with a 1,725 total. Jesse Jefferson of Henderson, Nevada, had held the top spot with 1,670.
Making his fourth consecutive appearance at the USBC Open Championships, Gibson knew he couldn’t let open frames slow him down.
He started his team event with a clean 221 game, and finished his performance at the Bowling Plaza with another clean game to end his singles series (211). He also added a pair of 200 games in doubles (214 and 209).
