Florida bowler rolls second 300 of 2010 USBC Open Championships
March 16, 2010
RENO, Nev. - Porter Angel IV of Orlando, Fla., could not have picked a better time to roll the first perfect game of his bowling career.
The 27-year-old right-hander tossed 12 consecutive strikes on bowling's biggest stage and recorded the second 300 of the 2010 USBC Open Championships on Tuesday.
After a disappointing 488 performance in team Monday, Angel spent part of the evening practicing at a nearby bowling center and returned to the National Bowling Stadium on Tuesday with a little extra confidence.
"Yesterday, I struggled, so I really got angry at myself," said Angel, who is the head mechanic at Orlando's Aloma Bowling Center. "I went and beat on the lanes last night and just wanted to get ready for today."
Angel immediately started striking in doubles and followed the 300 with games of 182 and 203 for a 685 series. He teamed up with Raymond Turgeon of Casselberry, Fla., for a 1,115 doubles effort.
"It was incredible," Angel said. "I woke up, went and ate at a buffet, came in here, and it just lined up for me real well. I've got four 300s in practice, but this is something I'll never forget. If you're going to shoot 300, make it count. I've had a 298 and a 299 in league, so I'm glad I finally got a 300."
Angel's only other Open Championships appearance came at the 2003 event in Knoxville, Tenn., where he also excelled in doubles, shooting 625. Other priorities and responsibilities kept him from returning to the tournament lanes until now, but he'll definitely be back in the future.
"Last night, I had some fun and met some people at the local bowling alley, and then, today, I woke up and just felt good," Angel said. "It's amazing. I can't get over it. I'm still shaking. I'll be back next year. I'm going to try to bowl every year now."
Angel added a 645 series in singles and finished his first trip to Reno with a 1,818 all-events total, nearly 250 pins better than his 2003 debut.
Barry Zimmerman of Grand Forks, N.D., rolled the tournament's only other perfect game on March 8.
