ARLINGTON, Texas – Five United States Bowling Congress Youth members who have excelled in the classroom and been actively involved in their communities have been selected to receive the 2014 Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarship.

The Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarship is presented in honor of the legendary bowling professional who was dedicated to helping youth bowlers. The International Bowling Campus Youth Committee determines the recipients, and each award winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship. The 2014 award winners, all seniors in high school, are:

• Nathaniel Briggs, Avon, Ind.
• Kendall De Jong, Chesapeake, Va.
• Joseph Miller, Loves Park, Ill.
• Samantha Swanson, Ravenna, Mich.
• Adam Zydzik, Milwaukee

Briggs, who attends Avon High School and has a 4.53 grade-point average (4.0 scale), has taken Advanced Placement courses in calculus, physics mechanics, computer science, and physics electricity and magnetism. He is a member of the National Honor Society, is the math team captain for the Academic Super Bowl and competes on the bowling team.

He volunteers at the Sycamore Elementary School Library, worked the Share Spirit Food Drive and assisted with the Gleaners Food Bank annual drive. He also served at the Special Olympics State bowling tournament, helping with lane management and scoring.

De Jong attends Grassfield High School and is a member of the Governor’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academy. She has a 4.15 GPA and has taken AP courses in english, government and history. She has received several academic awards and placed in the top 10 for business plans at the DECA Virginia State competition.

She has volunteered at the Rock ‘N Roll Mini-Marathon Run to benefit Wounded Warriors, Laps for Lymphoma fundraising event and the Girl Scouts of America. She also is a member of the Model United Nations and the school chorus. A bowler since age 4, she competes in several leagues and has earned numerous high-average awards.

Miller has a 4.07 GPA at Harlem High School and has taken several AP and honors courses. He is a member of the National Honor Society, was selected as an Illinois State Scholar by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission and is team captain for the bowling team.

He is vice president of the multi-school youth philanthropy group In Truth We Trust Advisory Council and helped the YMCA and Rock Valley College each earn a $2,500 grant for their Blast Off program that teaches model rocketry to elementary students. For his success on the lanes, he was named the 2013 Illinois USBC Star of Tomorrow.

Swanson has a 4.0 GPA and is the top-ranked senior at Ravenna High School. She is a National Honor Society member and has received Academic Excellence awards in numerous courses. She also participated in Yearbook, Student Council and Art Club, and was a member of the varsity bowling, track and cross country teams.

She has earned several awards as a member of the National FFA Organization and Business Professionals of America, and worked on many community projects through each organization. She also competed on the varsity bowling and cross country teams.

Zydzik attends St. Thomas More High School and his 4.48 GPA leads the senior class. He has taken AP Calculus as well as honor courses in pre-calculus, geometry, algebra 2, biology, chemistry, physics and english. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has been on the High Honor Roll each of his four years in high school.

He has served as a peer and elementary school tutor, school ambassador, retreat leader and Big Buddy for new and transfer students. He has volunteered at the St. Gregory the Great’s Parish Festival and The Gathering Meal Program. He is a four-year member of the golf and bowling teams, and has been team captain of the bowling team the last two seasons.
