Field set for 2016 Intercollegiate Team Championships

ARLINGTON, Texas – The 16 men’s and 16 women’s bowling teams that will compete for the Helmer Cup at the 2016 Intercollegiate Team Championships were determined at four sectional qualifiers held over the weekend.

The 2016 Intercollegiate Team Championships will take place April 20-23 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kansas, for the second consecutive year. Both the men’s and women’s championship round will be taped for broadcast on CBS Sports Network in May.

At the sectional qualifiers, each team bowled 64 Baker games over two days with total pinfall determining the four teams that advanced from each sectional. The sectional sites were 30 Strikes in Stratford, New Jersey, Suncoast Casino in Las Vegas, Stardust Bowl in Addison, Illinois, and Smyrna Bowl in Smyrna, Tennessee.

In Stratford, the Urbana men cruised to the sectional victory by more than 200 pins with a 13,655 pinfall total. Webber International, the 2012 ITC champion, was second with 13,453, while McKendree (13,313) was third. William Paterson set a sectional record of 3,640 in its final 16-game block to earn the final spot from the sectional with a 13,210 total.

The McKendree women rallied in the final three Baker games to capture the women’s top spot in Stratford with a 12,463 total. Webber International, which hoisted the Helmer Cup in 2010 and 2012, took second with 12,451. Delaware State (12,286) and Emmanuel (12,162) were third and fourth, respectively, to punch their ticket to Wichita.

In Smyrna, defending ITC men’s champion Wichita State rolled to the sectional win with a 13,095 total. Robert Morris-Illinois, the 2013 ITC titlist, finished second with 12,890, while Notre Dame-Ohio (12,660) and Ohio State (12,496) also advanced.

The Wichita State women completed the sweep in Smyrna in dominating fashion, winning the sectional by more than 500 pins with a 12,421 total. Notre Dame-Ohio took second with 11,905, while defending ITC women’s champion North Carolina A&T finished third with 11,896. Florida State was the final team to advance out of the sectional with an 11,887 total.

In Addison, the Morehead State men put together a strong final block to record the sectional victory with a 12,923 total. Purdue (12,743) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (12,730) took second and third, while Calumet jumped from sixth to fourth in the final four games Sunday to secure the fourth spot with 12,461.

The St. Francis-Illinois women distanced themselves from Wisconsin-Whitewater in the final 16 Baker games to win the women’s sectional in Addison with 12,049. Wisconsin-Whitewater (11,931), Wright State (11,663) and St. Ambrose (11,632) also advanced to the 2016 ITC.

In Las Vegas, two-time ITC champion Lindenwood took the sectional title with a 13,739 winning total. Pikeville (13,351) and San Jose State (13,233) finished second and third, respectively, while Midland edged Arizona State for the fourth and final spot by three pins with a 13,144 pinfall total.

Newman rolled to the women’s sectional win in Las Vegas with 12,639. Pikeville, the 2004 and 2008 ITC winner, took second with 12,293. Maryland Eastern Shore, the 2011 and 2013 ITC champion, finished third with 12,202, while Stephen F. Austin grabbed the final spot out of Las Vegas with 12,001.
