Field for 2013 Intercollegiate Team determined
March 10, 2013
ARLINGTON, Texas - The teams in the hunt for collegiate national titles was narrowed to 32, with one notable omission, on Sunday for the 2013 xbowling Intercollegiate Team Championships.
The field of 16 men's teams and 16 women's teams was determined at sectional qualifiers at four sites - Allentown, Pa.; Las Vegas; Fairview Heights, Ill.; and Smyrna, Tenn. - with the top four teams in each division advancing.
All teams bowled 64 games of Baker competition over two days for the right to advance to the Intercollegiate Team Championships, which will be held April 18-20 at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Neb. The men's and women's finals will be broadcast in May on CBS Sports Network.
Arguably the most stunning result of the sectionals was not which teams made it into the national finals, but which team did not. The second-ranked Wichita State men's squad, which has made nationals every year since 1986, failed to advance out of the Las Vegas sectional, finishing eighth.
Instead it was West Texas A&M leading the men's field in Las Vegas with a 64-game total of 12,860. Midland, Fresno State and Mount Mercy also advanced. The Wichita State women, meanwhile, dominated their division with 12,707 and advanced along with Maryland Eastern Shore, Stephen F. Austin and Midland.
The reigning men's and women's national champions from Webber International both advanced out of the Allentown sectional. The Warriors' women's team led their division with 12,455 to move on along with Pikeville, Kutztown and Sacred Heart. On the men's side, Notre Dame-Ohio led with 12,963 with Morehead State and William Paterson advancing along with Webber International.
The McKendree men led the way in Smyrna with 12,836, advancing to Lincoln along with Lindenwood, Marian and Florida State. The Lindenwood women finished well ahead of the field with 12,299 and snapped up nationals spots along with McKendree, Marian and Norfolk State.
The top-ranked men's team in the country, Robert Morris-Illinois, had little trouble in dominating the field in Fairview Heights, finishing with 13,309. Calumet, St. Ambrose and William Penn also moved on. In the women's division, Wisconsin-Whitewater led with 11,960 and advanced with Robert Morris-Illinois, Wright State and Newman.
